NYT: High Rate of Failure Estimated for Silicone Breast Implants
High Rate of Failure Estimated for Silicone Breast Implants
By GARDINER HARRIS

Published: April 7, 2005

WASHINGTON, April 6 - In documents made public on Wednesday, health regulators estimated that up to 93 percent of silicone breast implants ruptured within 10 years. The surprisingly high figure will further roil a debate next week about whether to lift the 13-year-old ban on silicone implants for breast enhancement.

A committee of plastic surgeons and other experts will convene on Monday to sort through studies of the safety and resilience of silicone implants. The panel is also widely expected to hear emotional testimony from scores of women who have had the implants.

The experts are to decide by April 13, the last day of the hearings, whether the implants are safe enough to be approved for wide use. The Food and Drug Administration then decides whether to follow the recommendation.

The panel voted, 9 to 6, in October 2003 to approve silicone implants. In an unusual move, its chairman later wrote a letter to the F.D.A. urging that it reject the recommendation. The agency sided with the chairman and ruled that more information was needed about long-term safety....

1. sounds like they break even more often than the water wings
Not sure why that would be. Don't the water based implants last 10 to 15 years?

9. About the same
Water or silicone will only last about 10 or so years. Saline is safer when it does break.

3. American idiocy
Women want boobs enlarged. Men take drugs to make their penises bigger.

A billion people starving around the world, without freedom. What's wrong with this pic?

5. If at least it would have the desired effect,
but besides all the health-effects, it's just so plain ugly.
I simply cannot understand the reason, women are doing this and I cannot understand that surgeons commit this bullshit.

You just have to watch the Hollywood Divas, who can afford the most expensive surgeons, like Demi Moore or Melanie Griffith....
They were beautifull women before...

I simply don't get it.

If women, who had breast cancer are doing it, or women, who are really suffering - there are such cases and I'd be the last to condemn them - but in most cases, it's just sick.

"Cosmetic Surgery" does still not exist.

These breasts, these lips, these faces are just plain ugly. And everybody, who did ever experience human beauty, does not have to look twice.

Besides, the "billion people starving around the world, without freedom." we have to watch idiots, who spent thousands and thousands and thousands of Dollars to disfigure themselves into ugly plastic-puppets.
That's really to much.

Hello from Germany,
Dirk

8. Oh well. Vanity has its price.
I can understand it for rare cases where a reconstruction is needed but the vast majority of it is pure vanity and misplaced priorities. Instead of getting a bigger rack, when are women going to focus more on who they are on the inside? I'm sorry it sounds harsh but hey, this is way too rampant in society today for me not to pipe up about it.
