Police investigate death threats against sealer
GANDER, NFLD. - Police are investigating death threats received by a Newfoundland fisherman and his family after he was photographed in a well-publicized confrontation with a seal-hunt protester last week.

In a photograph distributed around the world, Rendell Genge was shown raising a hakapik – a tool used to kill seals – over a cameraman from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society during the hunt off the shores of the Magdalen Islands.

Since the photo was taken, Genge's home has been inundated with angry calls from across Canada and other countries.

"They're telling us they're going to skin me, they're going to kill me, they're going to kill my family ... they're coming to get us," said Genge.

1. Good
You raise a hook to someone taking photos of what you're doing in a public place and you deserve the torment.

4. I Didn't See It
Necessarily like that as I wasn't there. Seems to me like I wouldn't react to someone raising a hook by grabbing a staff.
It might be that I was responding to someone grabbing my staff.
But then again I wasn't there.

Thank the gods for our media who can see things with a clear objective eye.

12. No
Only Rummy has robots. And I know that the media people would never knowingly let their personal biases enter into their pronouncements.

6. It wasn't a public place. the protesters violated the buffer zone

of 1/2 nautical mile that is to keep them out of sealing activity and avoid conflict.

"Deserve the torment"? Threatening to skin him and kill his family?

9. Unacceptable, but
it may be understandable, with these guys getting in his face while he's trying to do his job.

2. Well, although he royally screwed up...
Death threats are nonetheless inappropriate.

Perhaps the person he 'menaced' should do a little suing.

3. I wish he had belted him
ANd that's not because I'm against the hunt. It's because I work in media and anytime I've ever seen someone threaten a guy with a camera I've thought - crack the prick. And if anyone ever touches me you can bet your ass the reporter hat comes off and the asskicking hat goes on.

8. the guy with the camera wasn't media, he was with an organization
which demonizes these workers, and he had violated the buffer zone that is to separate them.

10. Yeah I misunderstood their phrasing of "with"
Edited on Wed Apr-06-05 08:44 PM by HEyHEY
I thought they meant a cameraman who'd come along for the ride. It actually said "From"

.
.
.

It was there that that many of the planes that the USA feared to allow into their country on 9/11 landed.

The local Newfoundlanders did everything they could for the stranded passengers, taking them into their homes, making them meals, in general, treating them like royalty

Newfoundlanders are a friendly lot by any standard

To be criticized for making a living is one thing, to have people harass and heckle is another . .

I suspect that this man took alot of verbal abuse b4 it got to the stage where we see this picture -

Heck - it wouldn't surprise me one little bit to discover that the protesters "arranged" this outburst HOPING for a situation just like this to capture this photograph.

The sealer was legally trying to make a living

He was AT WORK fer chrissake . . .

How many here have been heckled at work by people THAT SHOULDN'T BE THERE in the first place??

If the law is wrong - change the law. There is a process for that.

Interfering with people while they are legally making their living is just asking for trouble.

I'm curious as to why there is no statement from the person who was "attacked" - in fact, does this person have a name??

The "attacked" person has different descriptions: a crew member, a member of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, a cameraman from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, and an animal-rights protester. That's just in the 2 articles I read - this posted one, and the other one from CBC

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has pictured the WHITE baby seals on their website, which the sealers do NOT hunt.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is misrepresenting the issue right from the start, . . .

I'll side with Rendell Genge and the crew from Newfoundland on this one . . .
