Student reportedly shot near Lawless High School-New Orleans

New Orleans police and medical personnel are en route to a shooting near Lawless High School. Dispatchers have said a student has been shot in or near the head close to the school, at 5300 Law Street.

Details to follow . . .

(sidebar)School shootings aren't much of a rarity here in the Big Easy. Interesting how the national media never covers it. All the national school shooting stories I've seen involved troubled white males. If this is the criteria, then that would explain why the New Orleans school shootings don't get reported on.

4. Yes....but percapita it isn't #1....
my current residence of Dallas is. My hometown of New Orleans I think is around #5 or so.

6. I visited Dallas in 1968, I walked across the Houston Street viaduct
to the JFK assassination site one night.
Also, it was extremely racist and anti-Northerner even in the club scene at that time.

I've never been to New Orleans but I was in a musical project with Marcus Carmichael (piano) who had lived on Bourbon Street and played the clubs there.

I love the jazz funerals.

10. Dallas has mellowed a bit (I've been here since 1987)....
...probably due to the fact that there are a large number of transplants here...but its far from perfect, that's for sure.

7. I get the Times-Picayune and watch Channel 4 News
and I must be missing something because I don't recall any of the recent school shootings in New Orleans involving Troubled White Males. How many troubled white males are in New Orleans Public Schools?

8. that's my point exactly boss!
the national media, MSM or whatever only covers those "troubled white male" shootings, which of course we don't see down here.

12. other incidents of gun violence in the New Orleans Public Schools
anyone out of towners ever heard about ANY of these?

-- Two students fired guns in a crowded hallway of O. Perry Walker High School during a fight between two groups March 17. A student wounded in the leg was treated and released from a hospital.

-- Last November, a security guard shot a 16-year-old student in the foot as he stood alone under a tree at a New Orleans high school. The guard told police she smelled marijuana, the student became aggressive and appeared to be reaching under his shirt for a gun. Police said at the time no drug or weapon was found.

-- In April 2003, Jonathan Williams, 15, was killed by gunmen who entered the gym at John McDonogh Senior High School with an assault rifle and a pistol. Police said Williams was a suspect in an earlier death and the shooting was apparently retaliatory. Nine people were arrested.

-- On Sept. 26, 2000, two students were wounded at Carter Woodson Middle School. Witnesses said a 13-year-old shot a 15-year-old, who grabbed the gun and shot back.
