U.S. Blacks Lag Behind Whites in Money, Jobs -Report

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Blacks lag far behind whites in economic status, health and education and are in danger of "a great backslide" from the gains made since the civil rights movement began, the National Urban League said on Wednesday.

"This year ... almost every indicator available shows that progress for black America is stalling or falling," said Marc Morial, the league's president, at a briefing to release the group's annual Equality Index.

The index found the overall status of blacks in the United States stayed at 73 percent of the status their white counterparts have, virtually unchanged from the 2004 report.

Despite this apparent stability, Morial said, "No one should take that to mean black America has simply stood still in terms of the equality gap. To stand still in today's world is to fall further behind."

The widest disparity for blacks remains economic, where African-Americans have 57 percent of the economic status of whites.

3. I'd be interested in seeing cites to...

...some of those studies. I know single mothers are among the groups most likely to be in poverty, but I wasn't aware that childbearing at an early age was the single "greatest destroyer of building wealth."

...would have a economic impact. I was just curious about "every study" you've read stating that this is the number one inhibitor of economic progress.

It's a important factor, to be sure, but the biggest single factor?

14. Larger families, higher high school drop-out rate, higher

drop-out rates from college, higher rates of incarceration. Colleges have trouble getting the same number of African-American men as women, who usually earn less than men, helping to pull down the average lifetime income total.

Even among those in college, at UCLA and the UC system overall there was a concentration of blacks and other non-Asian minorities in things like social welfare, political science, ethnic studies ... Which is likely to be earn more money, somebody in science/engineering, or somebody in social welfare/political science?
