Review: Ex-prosecutor lied about barring Jews from jury
Wednesday, April 6, 2005 Posted: 1304 GMT (2104 HKT)

SAN FRANCISCO, California (Reuters) -- A former prosecutor lied when he testified that a California judge advised him in 1987 to exclude Jews from death penalty case juries, a judge reviewing the matter ruled Tuesday.

Former Alameda County deputy district attorney Jack Quatman testified last month that during jury selection in a 1987 murder trial, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Stanley Golde called him into chambers and instructed him to use his challenges to keep any Jews off the jury.

After hearing a week of testimony on the issue, Superior Court Judge Kevin Murphy backed the California attorney general's view that such exclusions never took place.

"I find that Mr. Quatman's allegations about Judge Stanley Golde and the alleged incident of April 27, 1987, are not true," Murphy said in a report sent to the California Supreme Court. "I also concluded from the evidence that Mr. Quatman is dishonest and unethical."

In his testimony, the prosecutor alleged that Golde, who was Jewish and who died in 1998, said Jews would not vote to execute someone.
