Fort Lewis soldier dies in Mosul attack

A Fort Lewis soldier died Saturday while serving in Mosul, Iraq, when his unit was attacked by insurgents, the military said Monday.

The Defense Department identified the soldier as Staff Sgt. Ioasa F. Tavae Jr. of Pago Pago, American Samoa.

Tavae, 29, was assigned to the Army’s 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, one of the three infantry battalions in the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division.

The Defense Department gave no other details about the attack, other than Tavae died from injuries sustained from enemy forces using small-arms fire.
