Sydney Morning Herald- Get Your Foot Off The Gas-It's Black Gold
Get your foot off the gas - it's black gold
By Christopher Kremmer
April 2, 2005

What will cost $3 a litre, require car-pooling, the permanent military occupation of Iraq and oil drilling on the Great Barrier Reef? Petrol, according to experts who have been contemplating its future in an oil-poor Australia.

In Sydney, it might mean a real estate crash and a long recession.

These are some of the consequences, experts say, if Australia does not wean itself off a diminishing supply of fossil fuels.

<snip>

According to the CIA, world oil reserves will last for about another 35 years at current demand levels. But demand growth is outstripping new finds and eating into the future.

In a world where virtually everything we consume depends on oil for its production or transport, the implications are considerable.

1. OZ could declare Socialism and Nationalise...
So could most of the oil-using countries in the West...

But NO...a socially rationalized energy system is beyond hope...

2. Wow, I just had a thought
Every day is backwards day at the Bush Whitehouse, as Janeane G says.

Maybe when Bushco is talking about Social Security, they are really talking about Peak Oil?

I really have a hard time understanding the brazeness of the lies that he and the other repukes tell, and I look for some kind of explanation.

Maybe the "trick" they are using is to say one thing out loud while actually thinking of something else?

That might make some "tells" harder to spot.

So when shrub talks about SS spending more than it is taking in, maybe he is actually thinking of the world oil reserves?

3. One way to cut back
Restore the railways and go back to hauling goods long-distance by rail.

4. Bingo
Restoring the freight lines would definitely make a big dent in the problem.

That's what is sad about this mess. There are so many simple solutions that we could implement right now, but of course our oil-controlled leadership won't even consider them. Oh well, soon enough they won't have a choice.

5. International jet fuel taxes, are zero, by treaty
Tax on jet fuel for domestic flight {US} is 4.3 cents.
Not a typo, four point three cents a gallon.
