WP: DeLay Wants Judiciary Comm. to Review Role of Courts (re. Schiavo)
DeLay Wants Panel to Review Role of Courts
Democrats Criticize His Attack on Judges

By Mike Allen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, April 2, 2005; Page A09

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.), under fire from Democrats for what they consider threatening remarks about federal judges, plans to ask the Judiciary Committee to undertake a broad review of the courts' handing of the Terri Schiavo case, his office said yesterday.

DeLay's office did not specify exactly what the majority leader wants the committee to do. The Constitution gives Congress the power to set the areas of authority for federal courts, but it was unclear what could be done by the committee in response to the Schiavo case, in particular.

The majority leader said Thursday he wants to examine what he called the "failure" of state and federal courts to protect Schiavo, who died 13 days after the court-ordered withdrawal of her feeding tube.

DeLay issued a statement asserting that "the time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior." He later said in front of television cameras that he wants to "look at an arrogant, out-of-control, unaccountable judiciary that thumbed their nose at Congress and the president."...

And a pretty direct confrontation with his own party.

Well, the Pope's pushed Terri out of the news, think they Republicans are hoping we'll all forget?

This is really scary. Just what does DeLay think he's going to do to the judiciary? How batshit loony is that guy?

11. Just remember: No matter what Tom Delay does about the judiciary. . .
the judiciary will have the final word on its Constitutionality.

Clinton always cautioned that you should never pick a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel (the press). Delay would do well to not pick fights with those who's job descript ion allows them to punish and incarcerate those who pick fights.

5. Lookie here Bugman....over here!
I'm thumbing my nose at you!

Tell me somethin' Bugman......have you slipped yet and said that Terri Schiavo is in a better place? Have you said that yet? Huh? Huh?

If you could drag her back to the hell she was languishing in, would you? Huh? Huh?

Have you been this big of an asshole all your life?

Shut your piehole, DeLay, you asshole. You'll be in prison before long and will have plenty of time to write it all down in your book.

6. Judge Birch, a strong conservative, appointed by GHWBush
Edited on Fri Apr-01-05 11:28 PM by Erika
told the Congress in strong terms that they were trying to usurp the judiciary system and to knock off the assault on the Constitution.

The 11th District Court of Appeals is one of the most conservative courts in the nation. Mr. DeLay (and I use the term Mr.loosely} needs to be taken down several notches. The right wing boards ignore the fact, in their histrionic hatred of judges who don't rule as they think they should, that these judges are conservative judges. They want their right wing fanatics as judges when they represent only a small minority of public opinion? Freepers need to gain a sense of reality.

9. I think he is "altering" his threat.
Did everyone see the Lautenberg letter? I think when pressed, DeLay will say his threat was this examination of "what he called the 'failure' of state and federal courts to protect Schiavo" rather than the physical threats his threat actually sounded like.

That's my interpretation.

yes or course. He threatens judges and then he demands a review, how about he gets picked up by the homeland security department, i'm sure he's violated some part of the Patriot act.

17. Didn't Congress simply ask the Federal Courts to look at the case?
And, didn't they look? And, after looking didn't they say the state courts had gone to great lengths to adjudicate the case and didn't they find the state courts had performed their duty in the utmost? And, when they were asked by the Schindlers to look AGAIN, didn't they say, we will look and when they looked they said they could not find a federal case in the situation? Is that not what happened? What did Delay want? Did he want to be able to nudge the judges with his elbow, give a little wink and say, "You guys no what we want you to do, now do it." Is that what he wanted?

Maybe, somebody should remind Delay this is still a country of laws no matter how much effort he and his buddies have put into turning it into a crime family. I only wish the judges would stand up more for the law, the constitution and the Bill of Rights. GITMO and the Patriot Act come to mind here.

19. America's religious right lashes out at judges over Schiavo
The Independent
By Rupert Cornwell in Washington
02 April 2005

Terri Schiavo is dead but the political storm unleashed by her passing shows no sign of abating - with the polarising and embattled figure of Tom DeLay, one of the most powerful Republicans on Capitol Hill, squarely in its eye.

A day after Ms Schiavo died in a Florida hospice, the unseemly battle between her parents and her husband moved into a new phase, this time over her funeral arrangements.

Her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, would like her to be buried in Florida.

But the last word - as it has throughout the angry dispute - almost certainly belongs to her husband, Michael Schiavo, who plans a cremation. The ashes will be buried at a secret site near Philadelphia, to avoid "a media spectacle," according to Michael's brother, Scott Schiavo.

20. * will use this to convince religious wackos
that he needs to pack the courts with conservatives. He will tell them that conservative judges will make the 'right' decisions in these cases. Even though the most conservative judges disagreed with * and followed the law. It's just an excuse to get his way.

21. 'The judicial system is now "totally out of control," said James Dobson,
the head of the Focus on the Family ministry and pressure group...'

Totally out of THEIR control, he means. They followed the law. That's just unacceptable to the religious right.

26. Be careful what you wish for, Mr. DeLay...
...you might get it.

Members of the Judiciary Committee are up for reelection every 2 years, and they've seen the polls on the Schiavo case just like the rest of us. They may very well end up lauding the judiciary's handling of the case.

Of course Tom DeLay still wields considerable power and he may get the result he wants from the Judiciary Committee. He's on a crusade, as is his party; their intent is to get the judiciary in their control by packing the courts. Then they can have control of the entire government and can quit pretending that it's about the Constitution and just go ahead and dictate a neofascist Christian government for the good ol' USofA.

Only for most of us, it won't be the good ol' USofA anymore when that happens. I for one intend to be armed before it comes to that. I don't know what will happen, or if it *will* come to that -- I hope not! But the specter of an out-of-control government has always, to me, been the compelling argument for the 2nd Amendment.

Regardless, in the very sad spectacle that the Terri Schiavo case became, DeLay stood alone as the single most despicable figure imaginable, who used his power and position as a pulpit from which to revile and slander an American citizen who tried to do his best dealing with a horrifically tragic situation, one that many others have had to deal with, including DeLay himself.

I'm not a Texan, but I did contribute to his opponent in the 2004 election. I'll do it again next time, too.
