Rebuffed governor is attacked by both sides

Gov. Jeb Bush tried twice, through the Legislature, to save Terri Schiavo.

The courts also rebuffed Bush at every turn. A neurologist who saw Schiavo on behalf of Bush's Department of Children and Families questioned whether Schiavo was in a persistent vegetative state, but his assessment was rejected by the courts.

Christian activists insisted Bush could do more.

"With the stroke of his pen, he could stop this," said Robert Schindler, Schiavo's father . "He's put Terri through a week of hell."

In the end, Florida's governor was under attack from those who said the government had no business meddling in a family matter and from those who said he wasn't doing enough.

4. Please work up a thimbleful of sympathy for those of us who have

to live under his "culture of life."

Last summer, a client (a doctor) told me that Medicaid recipients in FL are no longer eligible for chemo treatments because they cost too much. If you are on Medicaid and have cancer, you die. I have tried to goggle the law numerous times, but I cannot get through the laws.

I have asked; I have read. As a cancer survivor this is an important issue to me.

Over a year now, and neither reading or questioning have given me an answer.

get to live under two Bush's. At least we've got the warm winters. Life would really suck otherwise.

7. Thanks to global warming, a lot of us have warm winters.

I am old enough to remember when we had cold weather at least in December and January in Kansas.

Now we are as likely as not to have temperatures in the 60s and 70s during those months.

15. Yes, this was one of my points when talking to the walking

"braindead" on the Schiavo case. Women here in Kansas and Mo. can get mammograms paid for by Medicaid. But if cancer is found...no chemo will be paid for.

As a person with MS who was forced to drop insurance after my premium hit $700 a month, the hypocrisy in the rhetoric "culture of life" is insulting. To those millions to whom healthcare is denied that are facing a terminal illness, it is the equivalent of a death sentence

6. What I can't figure out is why they didn't change

the law in some way that would have changed the outcome in the courts. They could have if that was what they wanted to accomplish. They could have changed the law so that the whole family would get a say in making these kinds of decisions. They could have required the judge to admit a broader range of expert testimony -- dropped some of the restrictions about expert testimony -- in such cases. There were so many things they could have done. I wonder if they failed on purpose.

There have been laws in the books for many years. And to go back and change those laws is very difficult. Plus the judiciary may look at those new laws and deem them to be unconstitutional......

more money on regular Americans' health care. They just want to *look* like they do, for folks who care about that issue.

WAsn't the problem with the Terri law was it was specific to her and so would not help anyone else? By doing that they made the RW happy that they tried to help but when the 'liberal' 'activist' judicary threw out the law as unconstitutional they worked the RW up into a froth. This way they get the RW coming and going. $ to save Terri then more $ to overthrow the judicary. They get lots of free air time so people know who they are. Also by working up the RW it will bring more of them out of the woodwork to get out the vote. They got to talk about 'culture of life' without actually doing anything that made life better for anyone but themselves. It only backfired because the majority of people rep, dem, or other does not want to be kept alive like that and/or does not want any government body poking their nose into their personal life and death decisions.

The rich live like kings and the poor barely subsist. Kids are lost, people are turned away from medical treatment, and the local governments are corrupt. Jeb allows sweatshops filled by illegals and is rumored to notify them before raids so they can move to the next block.

Yet Jeb tries to force a woman to exist in PVS to pander to the right wing extremists. His brother signed a bill in Texas to allow hospitals to terminate food tubes for patients who can't pay.

Seems to me that Jeb may be vulnerable and without a stolen Florida in their pocket it seems to me that 2008 will be a hell of a lot harder for Republicans in the Presidential race.

had been talking up removing those term limits to keep Bush in office.

So either way we may win. I would appreciate him losing the Governorship via public dissent but I guess Term Limits help. :)
