Strike Ends for Gold Fields, Continues for Harmony (S.Africa)
(Rapaport...March 31, 2005) After courts in South Africa called the gold miner's strike at Gold Fields illegal, and ordered miners back to work, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) called off a work stoppage. NUM will however continue lobbying for higher housing allowances.

Gold Fields expected to resume full production with its night shift on March 31st. The company had said it was losing about $4 million each day of strike. NUM is demanding monthly living allowances for miners increase from about $117 per month to $200.

Miners at Harmony Gold remain on strike however in Free State. Job security and living allowances gave cause for 20,000 miners to picket for a second week. NUM expects to widen the Harmony strike to all operations as April begins.
