Reid opposes any timeline for Iraq
This story ran in our local rag last night and wasn't posted on the internet site until this morning so please don't pound on me for it not being less than 12 hours old. I think everyone needs to know where our minority leader stands on Iraq and what he is saying to the locals in Nevada, ASAP!!!

ELKO - The United States has to finish the job in Iraq without a timeline, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday

"No matter whether you believed it was the right or wrong thing to go into Iraq, we can't cut and run. It would mean the terrorists have won," he said.

"Setting a timeline is wrong," the Democratic Nevada senator who led a congressional delegation to Iraq last week said in a telephone interview from Washington, D.C.

He said Republicans tried to set a timeline when President Clinton sent troops to the Balkans, and "it was wrong then, and it's wrong now.

"A lot of the responsibility, though, is on the shoulders of the Iraqis. They've got to get their government together. It should have already been put together. The elections were in January," the senator said.

"Here it is approaching the end of March, and they still don't have a government together. If they don't get it together soon, I'm afraid of a civil war," he said.

Reid also said he talked with soldiers from across the state - including Elko, Ely and Battle Mountain - on his visit.

He met with the Army National Guard's 1864th Transportation Company that is transporting supplies from Kuwait to Iraq and includes 10 soldiers from Elko.

Reid's delegation of senators also went to Israel, Georgia and the Ukraine.

"It was a very good trip. We were looking at emerging democracies. We hope an emerging democracy is the Palestinian territory," Reid said.

Harry Reid, you're an idiot. A first class idiot.

Why does the Democratic party put people with their heads' this far up their asses in charge?

to Schiavo through just before he ducked on a plane for this trip and wasn't around to vote on it.

I am a bit disappointed these days. Those of us here in Nevada who know Harry Reid and this decision is similar to others he's made without talking to the people.

I, personally, have been suspicious about the election process in Nevada. He was a winner, right up there with Mr. Bush ...

He has done many things I appreciate though but his decision on the Bankruptcy Reform and now this is causing me to pause and wonder if he has made a trade off on Social Security with key Repugs ...or something like that... or like Yucca Mountain, funny how that suddenly needs to be shut down. Reid's been fighting it for years ...

10. This guy is a no good SOB -- and he is a DINO.
Once I saw he voting record I was completely against him.

His voting record on women's issues is BAD -- and he is a all show no blow jerk.

He should be kicked out of the democratic party and failing that he has no business in the position of minority "leader".

Some people at DU think he is the best thing since sliced bread and that he shows a backbone. I have yet to see any evidence of a real spine and his voting score is D to D-.

but what about those well-meaning Iraqis who happened to fight back when their country was invaded (just like you would, Harry)?

So now Harry's co-opting that GOP meme :eyes:

8. What Is The "Party Line" On Iraq Occupation?

It seems the main leadership body of the Democratic Party, the National Committee, does not have a position on the occupation of Iraq. And that has been true on almost every Bush presidential appointment and legislative action this year. The National Committee is silent while Democratic Party Congressional members vote for Bush's right-wing appointments and corporate inspired legislation.

So what does this National Committee do on vital domestic and foreign policy issues? It seems little or nothing. We have to maintain the "big tent" you know. And lots of room must be found inside that tent to accommodate those "Bush enablers" while they marginalize liberals and progressives inside that tent. So it appears that the main purpose of the National Committee is the collection of funds from corporate interests and private individuals. A lions share of those funds will be given to those who vote against the people and the public interest. Progressives may get what's left over.

Perhaps someone who is very familiar with the actual workings of the National Committee can educate me. I did notice that the National Committee has taken a firm position in support of Social Security. Now that's really going out on the limb!

4. minority leader
hurrumph! The US Senate calls an emergency recess Sunday session and the minority party LEADER issues no statement at all.

That is unacceptable.

Now here's some whining about shoulda coulda, again with no leadership beyond support for the lousy president's policy.

7. So, once again, Boxer is apparently at odds with the top brass...
Which I sort of like...but I would like it better if the damn Democrats wouldn't send so many different signals, one after the other.

11. Iraq is Quicksand
Edited on Thu Mar-31-05 01:27 PM by plasticsundance
How about a strategic plan for our bumbling misadventure in Iraq, Reid? Have any, you uninspiring stooge? All these political leaders are setting the stage to inform the American public that we're staying in Iraq, including the 14 permanent US military bases.

I just wonder how we're going to inform the Iraqi people about the permanent violence and senseless and meaningless death.

Here's an update of the alleged dawning of democracy in Iraq.

Iraq Government Deadlock Sparks Parliament Fury

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's parliament erupted in acrimony at only its second sitting on Tuesday and journalists were thrown out after legislators berated leaders for failing to agree on a new government, two months after elections.

When parliamentarians were told that despite last-minute talks that delayed the session no agreement had been reached, even on the post of parliamentary speaker, several stood up to say leading politicians were letting down the Iraqi people.

"The Iraqi people who defied the security threats and voted -- what shall we tell them?" Hussein al-Sadr, a politician in the bloc led by interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, asked the assembly before the news blackout.

Before parliament met, blasts echoed across Baghdad and a militant group said in an Internet statement it had fired four mortar bombs into the fortified, so-called Green Zone where Iraqi authorities are based. No casualties were reported.

More than 8 million Iraqis braved suicide bombers and insurgent threats to vote in Jan. 30 parliamentary polls, but many are growing angry that no agreement has been reached on forming a government.

"It is a farce," said 30-year-old taxi driver Mohammed Ahmed Ali. "If they couldn't form a government till now, how will they lead a country?"

14. This man can't relate to those of us who are not Senators who can
have our kids grow up, go to college and get high paying jobs with PR firms, law firms, etc. representing clients who need bills pushed through Congress ....gee, did I say that? Must be flashbacks to that old LA Times article....

Reid's kids won't be going to Iraq and risking their lives. One of them is the Clark County Commission Chairman, you know, the county he helped get a bill through Congress recently to grab rural Nevada water ...
