SPAIN further undermined fragile relations with the United States yesterday when it unveiled the biggest arms deal in Spanish history to supply President Chávez of Venezuela with ships and spy planes.
Diplomatic ties between Madrid and Washington have been strained since the Socialist Government withdrew its troops from Iraq and urged other countries to follow suit.
But the two countries’ differences pale alongside Washington’s open contempt for Venezuela under Señor Chávez. According to Condoleezza Rice, the US Secretary of State, Venezuela, the world’s fifth-biggest oil exporter, is a “negative force in the region” and a threat to US security.
The £895 million deal includes patrol vessels, mini- corvettes, supply ships and military transport and surveillance aircraft. It was brokered by José Bono, the Spanish Defence Minister, who insists that his country no longer “goes on bended knee” before America.
