Student, Police Officer Tried To Stop Red Lake Shooter
Edited on Thu Mar-31-05 10:28 AM by NVMojo
This is a Real Hero ...

Jeff May is recovering from a gunshot wound to the face in a Fargo, N.D., hospital. His mother, Jodi May, says she is haunted by images of what happened at Red Lake High School, but she is proud of the role her son played in trying to stop Jeff Weise’s deadly shooting spree.

The more that is known about a killing spree like this by someone so young, the more the heart aches ...too bad the fundies don't put some of their prayers and energy into figuring out what has gone so wrong in America that our children are murdering each other.

March 31, 2005

Just before he fatally shot himself, Red Lake High School shooter Jeff Weise was confronted by a tribal police officer and shot in the leg and hip. The confrontation occurred after a fellow student tried to tackle Weise and stab him with a pencil.

According to an e-mail account by Polk County Sheriff's Deputy James Goss obtained by The Associated Press, Weise, wounded by the two blasts from a .223 rifle, limped his way back to the classroom where he had already killed six people and committed suicide using a shotgun (see "FBI: Minnesota Shooter Acted Alone, Chose Victims At Random").

snip..

One of the teens seriously wounded in the attack told the Star-Tribune that he tried to stop Weise during the rampage, but was unable to overcome him. Jeff May, a 15-year-old Red Lake football lineman, ran up to Weise as the 16-year-old was dropping a gun clip and reloading. May stabbed Weise with a pencil and attempted to tackle him. Weise, wearing a bullet-resistant vest, shook off the attack and shot May in the face.

May, one of the victims most seriously wounded in the attack, has since suffered a stroke that has paralyzed the left side of his body. He is being fed through a tube and is sometimes on a ventilator to aid his breathing. According to the paper, in a note scribbled to his mother, May wrote, "I tried. ... I tried."

1. Teen killer spent year planning attack on school

Jeff Weise, the 16-year-old gunman who killed nine people last week in Red Lake, Minn., had been planning the attack at his high school with a friend for more than a year.

2. Actually that might be one of the problems
"too bad the fundies don't put some of their prayers and energy into figuring out..."

I don't want fundies figuring out ANYTHING for me or society in general. The farther they keep their prayers and energy away from me and society the better.

11. Yes.
Brenda Spencer, when 16, shot kids in a San Carlos, CA.(San Diego area) schoolyard from her window across the street. This occurred on Jan. 29, 1979. When asked by police why she did it, she said: "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day." The band "The Boomtown Rats" had a hit song based on the incident called "I Don't Like Mondays".

The singer for the Boomtown Rats, Bob Geldof, has since become heavily involved in charitable/development work, and has a good reputation in it, as far as I have heard.

12. The Ballad of Brenda Spencer
Monday morning, just another day
Doing everything the teachers say
Brenda’s tired of doing what she’s told
Tired of being young and feeling old
Brenda Spencer hasn’t lost her pride
She gets off on pedagogicide!

Chorus:

Hear what Brenda’s got to say
“Sniping livens up my day.
I don’t like Mondays anyway!”

Brenda’s tired of following the rules
Tired of sucking up to evil fools
Little did the grown-ups realize
Brenda’s gonna cut them down to size!
Rather than behave herself today
Brenda blew the principal away!

Chorus:

Six long hours, half a day
Brenda held the pigs at bay
Wanna know the reason why?
Brenda’d rather kill than die

Chorus:

All the experts say that Brenda’s sick
They get paid to pull that dirty trick
Teachers, don’t tell Brenda what to do
She knows how to deal with scum like you
Ah! the gladness, sadness, madness, fun
Growing from the barrel of her gun!

Chorus:

Monday morning, just another day
Doing everything the teachers say
Brenda’s tired of doing what she’s told
Tired of being young and feeling old
Brenda Spencer hasn’t lost her pride
She gets off on pedagogicide!

13. I don't like mondays
The silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload.
And nobody's gonna go to school today,
She's going to make them stay at home.
And daddy doesn't understand it,
He always said she was as good as gold.
And he can see no reason
'Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be shown?

Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
I want to shoot
The whole day down.

The telex machine is kept so clean
As it types to a waiting world.
And mother feels so shocked,
Father's world is rocked,
And their thoughts turn to
Their own little girl.
Sweet 16 ain't so peachy keen,
No, it ain't so neat to admit defeat.
They can see no reasons
'Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be shown?

Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
I want to shoot
The whole day down.

All the playing's stopped in the playground now
She wants to play with her toys a while.
And school's out early and soon we'll be learning
And the lesson today is how to die.
And then the bullhorn crackles,
And the captain crackles,
With the problems and the how's and why's.
And he can see no reasons
'Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to die?

Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
I want to shoot
The whole day down.

from the album "Fine Art of Surfacing" (1979)

4. Why does George Tenet get a Medal of Freedom award...
...And not Jeff May? He is a hero in every sense of the word.

All Tenet did was sit behind his desk and lie.

5.  heartbreaking
the photo of this young hero giving us the peace sign from his ICU bed in Fargo.

http://www.startribune.com/stories/156/5321739.html

"Her son is widely known as "Rudy," a name he picked up after seeing the film about the lovable undersize, underdog Notre Dame football player. Jodi May says that she would love to be able to see her son play again, but right now she'd just love to hear his voice.

"I just wish things could go back to the way they were," she said. "I'm waiting for someone to tell me I'm dreaming."

10. Thank you, Riverwalker!
I have to get to work now. I will try to look up the other young man who is intensive care too.

I work with Native Americans and over 75% of them are below the national median incomes in their families. These people already have a hard life.

15. Brave young man.
"I tried. ... I tried."

The picture alone brings me to tears, then to read what he scribbled in his note to his mom... so sad.

16. I cried too ...I am still upset.
Just got off the phone with a federal granting agency that is one of the agencies serving Native Americans. They are looking at budget cuts again under Bushjerk and there already is not enough money to serve the tribes out there with healthcare and mental health care services.

17. The First People have become the forgotten people.
Unfortunately, it takes a tragic incident like this for anyone outside to notice. and, yes - sadly, I do include myself in that blanket 'anyone' statement.

19. Keeping this kicked for a REAL hero!
In a horrible situation like that, this kid actually overcame FEAR and tried to DO something to stop a killer.

Not only that, but he actually had the composure to assess the situation, wait until the shooter was reloading, and use a PENCIL as a weapon!

That's some AMAZING young man lying there!

I hope he recovers, because this nation NEEDS more people like him.

Thanks for the address; I intend to drop him a line.
