(CT. Gov) Rell Unhappy About Likely MetLife, Travelers Layoffs (600-1200)

HARTFORD, Conn. -- In a statement issued from her office Wednesday, Gov. M. Jodi Rell said she is extremely unhappy as she learns more about the possibility of significant job losses resulting from MetLife's planned acquisition of Travelers Life & Annuity.

MetLife Inc., might cut between 600 and 1,200 jobs when it takes over Travelers Life & Annuity, according to The Hartford Courant.

That means some Travelers employees could get their pink slips this week.

MetLife employees won't get the layoff details until next week.

"My first priority as governor is to protect jobs in our state," said Rell. "I understand that government's role is limited in business mergers and acquisitions. But my job is to fight for these jobs, and I'm going to do just that. I am extremely unhappy about what I've been hearing."
