As of Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at least 1,529 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. At least 1,160 died as a result of hostile action, according to the Defense Department. The figures include four military civilians.

1. Strange that AP has began using the words "at least" when giving...
...these reports now? Can't they afford a calculator?

5. It started just lately
Delays in notification would be to give time before releasing the names of those killed. That would have nothing to do with giving the numbers of US soldiers who had been killed.

3. perhaps they realize that their numbers are bad
and the deaths are not being reported and calculated correctly.

They could go here:

http://icasualties.org/oif/

and look at the chart:

Period	US	UK	Other*	Total	Avg	Days
4 97 1 5 103 1.72 60
3 579 26 27 632 2.93 216
2 717 27 58 802 1.89 424
1 140 33 0 173 4.02 43
Total 1533 87 90 1710 2.3 743

and know they're "at least" 4 deaths shy

4. The pace has picked up in the last few days
Contrary to all the pentagon talk, my guess is that there will be 200,000 stationed there by this time next year, "fueled" by short supplies of oil for the west.
