Norm Olson: Parents' lawyer thwarted plan to send militias to aid Terri Schiavo
--------------------------------------
BY FRED GRAY NEWS-REVIEW STAFF WRITER
Wednesday, March 30, 2005 12:39 PM EST
--------------------------------------
Norm Olson, senior adviser to the Michigan militia and pastor of a strong right-to-life church in Wolverine, said Tuesday he had put together an unarmed coalition of state militias that were prepared to storm the Florida hospice where Terri Schiavo has been left to die, and take her to a safe house.

Olson said he needed only the OK from Schiavo's father, Robert Schindler, either directly or through his attorney David Gibbs, to put the plan, called "Operation Resurrection," into action on Sunday.

But Olson said Gibbs contacted the FBI instead of passing his message on to Schindler.

Olson said the FBI had been monitoring e-mails within militia groups and on Tuesday, March 29, sent an agent from Traverse City to his home in Alanson and other agents to militia leaders in the South to question them about the plan.

(snip)

Olson said that last Thursday he phoned Gibbs' secretary with a message that he had organized 1,500 to 2,000 militia members from Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia and Michigan, who were ready to remove Schiavo from the hospice and take her in a convoy to a safe house.

...they are considered "freedom lovers." It's only if they are swarthy and speak in un-American accents that they are considered 'terrists' even if the worst thing they ever do is hand you the wrong brand of cigarettes across the 7-11 counter.

why can't they connect the clinical dots about the likely genesis of Terri's eating disorders during her high school days? yup, you guessed it -- MOST OFTEN it's about living in an OVERLY controlling environment.

Also strikes me "spot on" that a few of those dots (court testimony included) consist of Terri feeling more free to talk with her husband and husband's family members about her wishes than ever talking to her parents about them. HELLO!

23. Maybe DeLay was right about Terri being a godsend
I wrote this just a few hours ago:
With no Democrats to kick around on the Schiavo issue, the MSM inadvertently exposed the true nature of the religious extremists who rule the GOP.

And now, like a present under a Christmas tree, comes a certifiable vast-right-wing conspirator calling judges "black-robed demons" and gloating, "Gibbs probably told the Schindlers not to get the militia involved...Now they're begging for someone to do something, but it's too late." And he's a pastor, too! This is YOUR Republician party, folks! Terri, you're the gift that keeps on giving!

He went underground after OK city bombing. If you ever want to hear the rantings of a true madman, this guy is it. He is Jim Jones, the NRA, and Jerry Falwell all rolled into one nice, neat little package. These are the people I have spoken about for years as the leaders of the "living behind barbed wire fences, painting their faces green, armed to the teeth, and shooting anything that moves" bunch.

He's a really nice guy who lucked out and got transfered there. Mostly, his cases involve casino gambling and tribal land cigarette sales issues.

We got the MI Militia to vote for Jennifer Granholm (no small feat) in 2002.

They even did a bit of organizing!

34. Since when is kidnapping considered aiding?
If they succeeded and removed her to a safe house they would not be aiding Schiavo they would be acting against her wishes and furthering the torture that is being done to her family.

The only way to aid a corpse is to stop keeping it animated by artificial means.

Mrs. Schiavo is long dead, only an empty vessel remains.

see if he has crossed over the dividing line? Religious nuts are placing themselves in a precarious situation. Governments use the people for sedative("religion is the opium of the people") affects but when religion tries to strong arm govt then they meet their demise. I think they better dust off them Bibles and start applying what they read. Who the hell believe they were coming unarmed?

54. Ok ...
I'm probably going to upset a lot of people here ... having read the postings.

Maybe I'm naive - but my feelings surrounding Terri have changed somewhat since first hearing about this case.

Initially my opinion was that Terri should be left to leave this world gracefully, and with some degree of dignity. After all, her quality of life was never going to improve, and it was apparent she had no real comprehension of reality.
On hearing her feeding tubes were to be removed I struggled for some time trying to form a rational opinion and finally concluded this was probably the best course of action to take. When accident victims are declared brain dead, and rely solely on machines to keep their bodies functioning there comes a time when one must decide the futility of keeping a lifeless, brain dead body alive.
When I realised Terri's feeding tubes were the only link between her life, or death, it suddenly occurred to me the decision to remove them was wrong ... because she would not die suddenly and peacefully ... she would die from dehydration, or starvation , or both.

Twelve days on this woman remains alive and question whether the most humane way to say goodbye to Terri would have been to retain her feeding tubes and administer a quick simple overdose of morphine - or similar drug - to end her life borne of compassion, rather than casually and sadistically allow her to starve to death.

As humans we unhesitatingly put our beloved pets to " Sleep" to end their suffering, as painful as it is to ourselves in making these decisions .... but we do so out of compassion and consideration for animals.
We certainly never consider depriving an animal of food or water - even if comatose - and continue to question the morality of those consenting to the preferred method in Terri's particular case.
Whether she is aware of thirst or hunger increases my concerns for her possible silent suffering and only convinces me her death will be no more than a disgusting act of immorality on a defenceless human being.

57. Terri isn't comatose. She's brain dead and has been for at least 10 years
Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 09:06 PM by rocknation
Don't confuse her body being on life support with her being alive. She's not dying a slow, agonizing, silently-suffering death--the mechanism in her brain that would have allowed Terri to be aware of thirst or hunger is not only non-functional, it's nonexistent.

I, too, think that the kind of injection you would give an animal (or a convict?) seems more humane and efficient. But it's illegal to do so to a non-convicted person--it's considered euthanasia.

Anyway, what's being done to Terri's body in the hospice is standard operating procedure, and it can take a couple of weeks. But it's not inhumane, because the things that made Terri Schiavo human died a decade ago. It's time to let her body follow suit.
