Simon & Schuster to publish Mary Cheney's memoir
NEW YORK -- Mary Cheney, daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney, will publish a memoir under Mary Matalin's new conservative imprint at Simon & Schuster, the company announced Tuesday.

Cheney, a top aide during her father's campaigns in 2000 and 2004, has drawn much political attention because she is openly gay.

"The first time I campaigned with my father I was 8 years old," Cheney said in news release issued by Simon & Schuster. "I've been involved with campaigns as a family member, a staffer and, though I certainly never intended it, as a political target for the other side."
....
The Republican vice president and his wife, Lynne Cheney, accused Kerry of using their daughter for political gain. Lynne Cheney said Kerry's statements amounted to a "cheap and tawdry political trick."

Matalin said the book would give Mary Cheney a chance to give her own perceptions and reflections on the issue, which she was unable to do while working on the campaign.

7. I think the indirect targetting of Mary Cheney's family was not good.
Both Kerry and Edwards brought up the little-known (but still known) fact that Dick Cheney's daughter was a lesbian in the middle of two major debates in 2004 detracted from the time and effort they could have devoted to discussing anti-terrorism efforts, strengthening the national defense and reforming social security. The targeting of Mary Cheney's family by attacking through her on national TV was in poor taste.

12. True that; Kerry won the third debate
and all the coverage was about his gratuitous mention of Mary Cheney; his poll numbers moved down for 3-4 days afterwards as a result.

The only surprising thing about all of that is many lunkhead Democrats refuse to acknowledge what was an obvious tactical mistake. Well, they can read about it all over again when the book is published.

4. NYT says the advance is a million $
Mary Cheney, the daughter and campaign manager of Vice President Dick Cheney whose identity as a lesbian became an issue in the presidential campaign, has sold the rights to a memoir to Simon & Schuster for an advance of about $1 million, according to two people involved in the negotiations.
....
"We had several attractive offers," said Mr. Barnett, who had also negotiated Ms. Matalin's arrangement with Simon & Schuster. "In the end, Mary Cheney found great advantage to working with her old friend Mary Matalin."

5. So MATALIN Is Going to Be the Cash Funnel for Wingnts
The Neo-Judith REGAN. (This gives excuse for re-running these REGAN items.)

.... Then Judith and Rupert found each other -- and ReganBooks was born. Not only did their commercial instincts mesh, but Judy's what's-the-world-ever-done-for-me politics were highly compatible with the Murdoch view.

And then the sex part. It's a one-woman show.

I have never heard anyone talk about sex the way Judy does. I have never heard anyone talk about their sexual partners the way Judy does. I have never heard anyone analyze individual motivations, the workings of the marketplace, and politics, too, in such precisely sexual terms. The other day, on her show, she kept interrupting her tempered guests on the subject of why women like Bill Clinton, and, voice rising, saying: "They want to have sex with him -- that's why they like him!"

Early in her career at Simon & Schuster, she published a book called The Rogue Warrior and fought tooth and nail for a full-face cover photo of the author. "Don't they understand?" she stormed to me. "Women will buy this because they want to fuck him!" She got the full face and a best-seller.

http://www.zianet.com/insightanalytical/newlow.htm

Regan looked straight into the camera and for almost 10 minutes, delivered a pseudo stream-of-consciousness poetry riff mocking Clinton. Referring to his sad boyhood, she mocked his loneliness, then proclaimed that he built himself up and called himself KING, because "I am rich and I can do what I want!" She likened him to the cast out Socks, and envisioned him an old man meeting up with Socks at 125th street, both holding tin cups. ....

It was incredibly vicious. What was especially appalling was how she took the most painful aspects of Bill's background--his truly grievous childhood--and twisted them, using them to mock him. If this wasn't the "politics of personal destruction" I don't know how else you could describe this horrific display. ....

10. Mary Cheney to write memoir
http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/books/03/30/mary.cheney.book.ap/index.html

Cheney, a top aide during her father's campaigns in 2000 and 2004, has drawn political attention because she is openly gay. Her memoir is the first acquisition for Mary Matalin's publishing subdivision, Threshold.

Matalin, a Republican pundit and strategist, said the book would give Cheney a chance to give her thoughts on the issue -- something she couldn't do while working on the campaigns.

...

During the 2004 campaign, presidential candidate John Kerry mentioned Cheney's sexuality when asked during a debate with President Bush whether homosexuality is determined at birth.

The vice president and his wife, Lynne Cheney, accused Kerry of using their daughter for political gain. Lynne Cheney said Kerry's statements amounted to a "cheap and tawdry political trick."

-------------------------------------------------------

Bush's approval ratings are down, so let's put out a story about Mark Cheney just to attack that evil liberal John Kerry.
