http://www.turnto10.com/news/2329996/detail.html

CHARLESTOWN, R.I. -- The chief of the Narragansett Indian Tribe was arrested Monday by state
police in what onlookers called a "violent" raid of the tribe's new tax-free tobacco shop.

Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas and other tribal members were arrested as police entered the smoke
shop through three separate doors.

Reporting live at the scene, News Channel 10's Bill Rappleye said it was yet to be determined
who authorized the raid. Gov. Don Carcieri is expected to answer questions at a news conference
at 5 p.m.

Rappleye reported that the state police were asked to show papers as they entered the lot but
no papers were shown. The troopers, according to Rappleye, then continued to charge across the
parking lot to enter the tax-free shop.

Several tribal members were wrestled to the ground and handcuffed.

1. This is nuts.
I don't understand why they felt such brutal tactics were warranted.

14. I think I know why this happened.
When I lived in Rhode Island I heard rumors that members of organized crime would bring in semitruckloads of cigarettes so smokers could avoid paying taxes.

If this is true, the Naragansetts were crossing the gangsters and you don't want to do that. It's not healthy.

CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (AP) The chief sachem of the Narragansett Indian
Tribe was arrested Monday by state police in what onlookers called a
''violent'' raid of the tribe's new tax-free tobacco shop.

Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas, First Councilman Randy Noka, and other
tribal members were arrested as police entered the smoke shop through
three separate doors.

Thomas and Noka each had been released on $100 bail and returned to the
reservation shortly after 5 p.m. Monday. Dozens of tribal members greeted
them with hugs and cheers.

''I knew this would happen,'' said Thomas, who had two bandages on his
left arm and had a swollen right wrist. He refused to offer more comment
until he heard what Gov. Don Carcieri had to say about the incident.

Carcieri, who was out of town during the raid, arrived at T.F. Green Airport
about 5 p.m. and was being briefed on the incident before addressing
reporters.

4. What were the RI troopers thinking of? What they did was appalling!
The RI state police were enforcing the law and Gov Carcieri told Chief Thomas at a recent meeting that he was opposed to a tax free tobacco stand. But to close the stand down ala Eliot Ness attacking bootleggers was totally wrong. RI state troopers should be ashamed of themselves.

8. Looks like while the cats (politicos) were away
the rats(SMOKY BEARS)thought they'd play - just can't ever tell what those "savages" might be up to next - maybe like a spook bastardizing stolen software in the back room, i.e.,
(Michael Riconiscuito?)on the Carbazon reservation in the Old West.

Oh, the conspiracies are mindboggling and the brutality to Native Americans unending! The video was indeed incredible and VERY troubling.

9. So, RI declares war against the Narragansetts???
Now, I'm not too sure about Rhode island and the Narragansetts, but every other place I've been with "indian" gambling and smoke shops, the property said facilities stand on is part of the Sovereign Soil of the Nation that runs the business.

I remember a sign at the entrance to a smoke shop in Tulsa that pretty much said "You are entering tribal lands of the Creek Nation. you are now visitors in a foreign land. Please act accordingly".

I don't think those state troopers had any authority to enter that smoke shop, warrant or no.

10. Is it just me or
are state police acting more and more like stormtroopers? I hate where I live...they all have shaved heads and bully little kids on the street...small town brownshirts with bad attitudes..
even the city police act like assholes..
When I was in the UK I NEVER saw them that mean. They were at least civil towards the populace.

11. Not just the State Fuzz...
The county deputies and some of the small-townies are getting in on the "HUT! HUT! HUT!" act, too...

20 years ago, they looked like average guys and gals, just doing the "protect and Serve" thing.Polite, nice to kids, would probably pour out your beer and tell your folks the next day.

Now they all look and act like they're channelling R. Lee Ermey straight from the set of "FMJ"...

Buzzed heads (even the women) and fuck that police uniform shit, if the department allows military style "tactical" gear, that's what they wear, even off duty...

I used to like cops, some of my best buds were cops, hell I even tried-out for the State Fuzz (bad eyes), but these days? I think they're all a bunch of barely-controlled psychopaths compensating for a too-small or missing penis...

and their Prime function?

Revenue "Enhancement" (that's fuzz-speak for "write a shit-load of expensive summons")

13. Just watched the video
Very disturbing. There was no reason why the local and state law enforcement agencies couldn't have waited til tomorrow, when a court of law is to decide the outcome.

Looks like the governor was full of shit about wanting to handle this situation piecemeal.
