Educators, parents take over New Haven board meeting

UNION CITY — New Haven teachers gave their union the authority to call a strike and took over a school board meeting an hour after the results officially were announced Thursday night.

More than 200 angry teachers and parents filled the New Haven boards room and spilled into an adjoining room when the meeting got out of control. <snip>

School board President Jonas Dino lost control of the meeting when he called for a five-minute recess and a handful of parents who had not yet spoken demanded a chance to be heard. <snip>

We pay your salaries, he told board members, who had not yet left the room. You're walking out on your boss. <snip>

James Logan High teens march to school district headquarters

UNION CITY — Sixty students walked off James Logan High School's campus to show support for their teachers' contract demands Friday morning.

Students walked from the high school to New Haven school district headquarters, less than a half-mile away, and they returned to class minutes later, Logan Principal Don Montoya said. The walkout was peaceful. <snip>

A Logan ninth-grader, who helped organize the rally, said she and her friends were told by police to return to class. <snip>

In 2003, about 250 students walked out of school to show support for their teachers' contract fight. In November 2002, about 500 students surrounded school district headquarters to call for the firing of then-Superintendent Ruth McKenna.

4. So here are the sides:

"The school district has offered teachers a flat 1 percent increase in total compensation and $1,140 for teachers who use the districts health plan.

"The union wants a 3.72 percent salary increase and an additional $1,176 per teacher to cover higher benefit costs. They also are asking for smaller class sizes."

And that's not counting step increases on the salary schedule.
