UN Team Urges Independent Inquiry of Hariri Death

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - A U.N. fact-finding team said on Thursday that Lebanon's investigation into the killing of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri was seriously flawed and could not reach a credible conclusion.

The fact-finding mission led by Irish Deputy Police Commissioner Peter Fitzgerald said an international independent commission was needed to "find the truth."

The report, delivered to Secretary-General Kofi Annan by Fitzgerald, said Syrian military intelligence bore primary responsibility for the lack of security, protection and law and order in Lebanon and said Lebanese security teams showed "systematic negligence" in performing their duties.
