Red Lake elders call for a return to tradition after teenager’s fatal rampage
ELDERS of the Red Lake Chippewa tribe urged their bereaved members to seek solace in ancient Native American traditions yesterday to heal the psychological wounds of Monday’s carnage.
Tribal elders gathered at their council building, 200 yards from the high school where Jeff Weise, 16, went on the killing rampage that claimed the lives of nine people before he committed suicide.
Residents of this impoverished reservation in the frozen Minnesota prairie lit a long pipe in a ceremony of remembrance. The bowl of the pipe, the room was told, represented the circle of life. The room filled with the pungent aroma of cedar wood and tobacco as the 50 people crammed inside chanted incantations.
“Nobody knows what to do,” Cindy, a mother of one and teacher at the local kindergarten, said. “I know what to tell my 13-year-old son but I don’t know what to tell the little ones.”
