Mary Matalin to Head Publishing Imprint (Simon & Schuster)
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=487&u=/ap/20050322/ap_en_ot/books_mary_matalin_1&printer=1

Mary Matalin, the Republican pundit and strategist also known as the wife/sparring partner of Democratic consultant James Carville, will run a new conservative publishing imprint at Simon & Schuster.

"It's the absolute nexus of what I love to do," Matalin told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "I think we're on the threshold of a whole new way of looking at politics and policy and there's something vital about getting those ideas down in book form."

The imprint, currently unnamed, is expected to release six to 10 books a year, beginning in 2006.

"There have been sentiments throughout the company for creating a conservative imprint," said David Rosenthal, executive vice president and publisher of Simon & Schuster's adult trade division. "Mary is a distinctive voice in politics ... and we thought she might be interested in doing this. It seemed liked a cool idea."

5. Now she's involved in 'Simon's Shoestore', huh?
Fitting. That's a name, btw, used by people who think S&S will do anything to sell books, and has a muddled selection.

6. Yep; I can see the window signs now

"Ann Coulter's Latest Screed: $3.99/lb"

on edit: I can't wait to see the returns level on this imprint. Sure, you can "sell" thousands of books, but how many will come back from B&N, etc because the audience isn't a book-buying one? The conservative ideas book market will saturate soon. Also, they had better not offshore the book composition!

9. How many pretend books can RW foundations support?
Sure, there is good money in this bulk buying scam, but everything has a limit. Won't rich rightwing propagandists eventually suffer from donor fatigue?

18. TONS... Every time there is a "conference" or "roundtable" or "panel"
discussion, there are "books available".. They are sometimes GIVEN away. The Scaifes & Murdochs of the rightwing, BUY THEM IN BULK to get them on the best seller lists, and then DUMP THEM...Probably lots end up in warehouses until they are pawned off to the Dollar Stores.. It's all a "SHOW".. Of course the LARGE sales are the reason given for all the personal appearances and guest spots of all the screaming-head shows..

It;s a perpetual-motion Scam..It's phony all the way through..

14. "It's the absolute nexus of what I love to do"?
Way to go, Mary. Start your publishing imprint off with a Bush** impression. Lose the 'absolute', and use 'nexus' properly, as such:

"It's the nexus of all the different things I love to do."

There. Was that so hard?

15. Does this mean CBS will now be whoring her books, too?
like they've done with all S&S titles since Viacom took over? Maybe they could just turn 60 Minutes over to her. At least we know she doesn't have any liberal bias, not like that commie Rather. </sarcasm>

24. March 29, the Associated Writing Programs and Writers--
in Vancouver, B.C. (the first time outside the United States)---

for anyone interested in writing or the teaching of writing. Many independent publishers will be there, as well as some established presses who are more reliable and more curious.

READ, friends--not just the typical mass media stuff. READ! It invigorates your soul and provides you with mental avenues far beyond the mass media; in that sense, it takes you out of the malaise foisted upon you by these melodramatic theme songs and graphics, death upon death...sensation upon dead sensation...the funereal, the kitchen table kitsch, the Star Wars music and graphics of cable television...

Will the mass media cover the AWP gathering? Has it ever? Not that I know of. It might mention "Sundance Films," which are good, etc., but does it cover the raw stuff?

Mary Matalin--very funny.
