Wonder who his inside connections are to the Dems who will backstab Reid on SS???
RENO, Nev. (AP) - Reforming the Social Security system is one of the most important challenges facing the nation, Vice President Dick Cheney said Tuesday.
"I think we have reached the point where the majority of people realize we have a problem with Social Security," Cheney said in a speech to about 300 people at a recreation hall in Reno.
"We think it is about as important of an issue as we face as a nation," he said.
Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., introduced Cheney at the townhall meeting, one of a series of stops the vice president was making in the West to help rally support for an overhaul of the system.
Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., the Senate minority leader, is among Congress' chief critics of the Bush administration's call for at least a partial privatization of the system.
Cheney mentioned Reid as among Democrats "who are saying we're not going to talk about it." But the vice president said he believes the administration is "beginning to chip away at that.
"I've had private conversations with the other side. I think there are some members there who are eager to talk about it," Cheney said.
