Minnesota Seeks Cheaper Drugs From Britain, Gov. Says

Minnesota's governor, saying he feared pharmaceutical companies will try to stem the importation of cheaper prescription drugs from Canada, said Friday he was looking to British mail-order pharmacies as a backup, the Associated Press reported.

Now, Pawlenty says he's nearing a plan to enlist two British pharmacies that would dispense drugs produced in Italy, Spain and Greece.

"We may very well need it if the drug companies succeed in suffocating supplies to Canada," Pawlenty said Friday on his weekly radio show.

The Bush Administration has opposed prescription drug importation on the grounds that the cheaper medications may be counterfeit, improperly labeled, and even unsafe.
