FDA Alerts Hospitals Not to Use Possibly Contaminated IV Solution
FDA Alerts Hospitals Not to Use Possibly Contaminated IV Solution

The Associated Press
Published: Mar 18, 2005

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal regulators alerted hospitals nationwide Friday night not to use a solution commonly used on heart patients, saying it may be contaminated with the bacteria that caused this year's shortage of flu vaccine.

The Food and Drug Administration issued the alert against use of a PharMEDium Services Magnesium Sulfate with the lot number 100504900049 and expiration date 4/4/05. It is produced by PharMEDium Services of Houston.

The product is often given intravenously to patients undergoing cardiac surgery and was apparently distributed to several hospitals around the country.

4. They are vigilant about these things
The hospitals will remove it and return it to the manufacturer for a refund.
You forget that the hospitals are staffed with real people that are pharmacists and nurses who don't want to run the risk that their family could come in the door and receive the tainted medication.
Notwithstanding the fact that there would be lawsuits out the wazoo, and if a patient that was funded via Medicaid, Medicare or self pay received it and got septic, it would mean a lengthy stay on high powered antibiotics.
So it is clearly in their best interests to pull it off the shelves.
