Shot Iraqi politician dies from wounds
Thursday, September 25, 2003 Posted: 1351 GMT ( 9:51 PM HKT)

Hashimi was one of three women on the council.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraqi Governing Council member Akila al-Hashimi died Thursday from gunshot wounds sustained five days ago in an attack on her convoy, and her loss is being mourned and decried by the coalition and Iraqi officials.

Hashimi's condition had been deteriorating while she remained in the critical care unit of Baghdad's Ibn Sina Hospital, a spokesman for the Governing Council said.

The Governing Council issued a statement saying Hashimi "fell martyr on the path of struggle for freedom and democracy in building of this great nation.

"The heinous crime was committed by a godless and evil band known for its oppressions and injustices.

On this occasion we reiterate our commitment to continue on the same path and shall advance steadfastly with determination and shall remain faithful in fulfilling our great nation's goals."

2. The message should be crystal clear:
Collaborate with the U.S., and you will die.

I sure wouldn't want to be a member of the Governing Council, right about now...

3. My Professor David Dunford was one of the civilian ministers
under Garner then Bremer and he knew her very well. He said he worked with her nearly every day. Seemed pretty sad the last several days. it is a terrible event, that lady was hard working and making an attempt to do something great. Too bad. Just awful. Words cannot express how sad this is.

4. Didn't they try to softpedal her condition earlier?
That standard reflex of intitially downplaying all casualties seemed to indicate she was going to be fine. The wounds didn't sound fine at all.
How many in the Governing Council will emigrate to the US after this is over and share bitter stories with their South Vietnamese neighbors?

5. How sad.
But if she were part of the puppet government that the invader of my country installed. I would be forced to remove that puppet government by any means necessary.
