Davao Sun-Star
AN AMERICAN teacher reportedly sought for investigation in connection with the May 16, 2002 explosion at the Evergreen Hotel in Davao City said he is willing to give any and all information he may have about the blast. The American, who is said to be a friend of Michael Terence Meiring, is one Stephen Hughes.
Hughes wrote a letter to Justice Secretary Raul M. Gonzales, last December 29, in reaction to a December 22, 2004 story in the Philippine Star quoting Gonzales as having requested the assistance of US Ambassador Francis Ricciardone, the US Department of Justice, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US Department of Homeland Security to locate and investigate Hughes in connection with the explosion in the hotel, particularly in the room rented by Meiring.
Hughes said: "With this letter I offer you and the Philippine authorities any and all information I may have concerning the above event. In May 2002, I made this same offer to Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte and the Davao police, giving my residence, my return email address, and my cellphone number. At the time my residence was in Bislig City, and I taught at the John Bosco College there. Presently I reside in Mount Ary, North Carolina, and am employed by the Surry county Public Schools here. At no time has my location been undisclosed; I have been available at all times since May 16, 2002."
...
"Although we had several conversations between February and May, Meiring was simply an acquaintance at the time of the explosion. The friendship developed only after the explosion, as I sat at Meiring's bedside during the days before he was airlifted to the United States for treatment. I have no information about Meiring's life prior to that acquaintance."
