Hersh Honored At State FOI Anniversary Event
Longtime Investigative Journalist Is Feted For Lifetime Achievement

By KENTON ROBINSON
Day Staff Columnist, Enterprise Reporter/Columnist
Published on 3/16/2005

Westbrook — “The problem is,” Seymour M. Hersh began, “George Bush is convinced he's doing absolutely the right thing ... This is a guy who is not moved by us. And it scares the hell out of me.”

Hersh, the author and journalist who has made a career of exposing government corruption since he first wrote about the My Lai massacre in Vietnam, drew a parallel between what happened at My Lai and at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

In both cases, he said, it was the soldiers and lower-ranking officers who took the fall, while the generals had sanctioned it.

“Everybody knew everything,” Hersh said, adding that the president knew about it at least three months before it came out in the press.

1. Good for him
I was just listening last night to a book on tape ("Don't Know Much About U.S. History"), and Hersh's role in breaking the My Lai story was mentioned. It's incredibly that 30 years later, he would be breaking the full story about another U.S. military atrocity in a country that we invaded for no good reason.

3. LOL, too perfect
Bush's refusal to face realities, Hersh said, reminds him of an old Richard Prior routine in which Prior's wife catches him in bed with her best friend.

“This isn't happening,” Prior tells her. “Who you gonna believe: me or your lyin' eyes?”

5. The greatest living American journalist
The failure of American journalism to carry on the tradition makes Sy even more valuable--let us hope we have him for many years to come.
