Bush Says Won't Unveil Plan Yet on Social Security

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) said on Wednesday he would not unveil a legislative proposal anytime soon on his plan to create private accounts for Social Security (news - web sites) because Congress would probably reject it.

Still, he said in an interview with regional newspapers that he thought he could get a deal by working with Congress to develop a consensus on restructuring the retirement program.

"Sure enough, the bill I send up will be - phhtt!" Bush said. The Omaha World-Herald said he made a sound like air escaping from a balloon and added, "The first bill to go down."

Even though Republicans control both chambers of Congress, Bush said he didn't think it would be possible to pass legislation on Social Security using a strategy of moving ahead on Republican votes alone. Democrats have adamantly opposed that change to the Depression-era retirement program........

2. I think it's probably to change the subject
President Bush wants to get peoples minds off the fact that he is failing to get his social security bill passed.

3. So what's he "drumming up support" for in those "townhall meetings"??
I'm sure if the polls were flipped, this "unwritten bill" would be in the congress already.

6. About that news conference...
It's scheduled at 10am–the same time that the House Judiciary Committee meets to vote on a resolution regarding Gannongate. How convenient to take the focus off that vote....

away from because that is when he holds press conferences.

or scare everyone into submission? Should be interesting to see...

9. The moment that legislation drops
every economic analyst in the US is going to tear it apart and flood the airwaves with their "spin" on it. Good news or bad, you can count on the MSM creating mass public confusion that most people would rather leave the system alone until a better, precise, and favored model is introduced.

10. But hey, let's scream at Dems for not putting a plan on the table.
How do you have a comprehensive rebuttal to something that doesn't exist yet? Sheesh. Why should Dems have to rebut something that frigging bad?

13. This is such a scam. He has nothing to negotiate with. That's why
he isn't revealing his devious details. He had hoped to scare Congress into a flurry of worries so he could walk in with a strong hand, but he has nuthin!

19. He's playing poker with the Dems,
trying to lull the party into revealing it's plan before his.

You've heard the drumbeat already about "The Democrats are bashing our dear leader, why don't they have a plan of their own rather than just bashing Chimpie?"

"Fix it, don't nix it" is clever, but (IMHO) kind of a silly tactical maneuver for sound bite visibility.

The Democrats MUST resist the temptation to reveal a plan before Chimpie...if ever. This should be fundamental tactical maneuvering, make your opponent tip his hand first, then let the public shoot it down on its merits or lack thereof, which this plan has many.

This is like shooting fish in a barrel because the public is already shooting it down and he really hasn't revealed shit yet despite his 60 day bamboozlepalooza tour on our dime.

24. He and his handlers have no plan to reveal
He's running around the country talking about it, like he talks about everything - no details. He thinks he has his mandate to do whatever he wants.

He picked the wrong fight. He wants the Democrats to come up with the details, because he is too stupid to make a plan on his own. Fancy MBA and all.

He can't manage his piggy bank.

He's just laughing at a country that will put up with this shit. It's amazing. He's saying flat out, I have a total piece of shit plan that nobody with half a brain would accept, so I'm not going to say what it is until I can figure some way of fooling you morons into voting for it. Unbelievable.
