Teachers may bolt over pay (HI)
By Johnny Brannon
Advertiser Education Writer

Hawai'i's 13,000 public-school teachers are seeking annual raises worth $90 million, and their union warned yesterday that many plan to leave their jobs soon unless salaries are increased substantially.

In a move meant to bolster its bargaining position, the Hawai'i State Teachers Association said a survey of its members found that half do not plan to be teaching here within five years.

Thirty-eight percent of the teachers who said they intend to take other jobs here or on the Mainland indicated that a need for higher pay was the primary reason, according to the union. <snip>

Hawai'i has long grappled with a teacher shortage, and schools superintendent Pat Hamamoto said the union's projections are being taken seriously. <snip>

7. I was one of these...
I left my middle school in Hawaii after just one year working there due to the horrendous pay and raise opportunities (only district I have ever worked in where the teachers have to negotiate to move up a step on the pay scale.). Out of the 5 teachers working their first year in my school, only one returned.

Now, I am a teacher in DCPS, and it is a drastic improvement, if you can imagine that.

9. District of Columbia Public Schools?
Shit, it must have been really bad in HI if DC is an improvement. Are they at least paying you on time these days -- a couple years ago, there were teachers who hadn't gotten paid in months because of a screw-up with the computer system.
