Father on crusade to prove Afghanistan ambush killed CIA officer

Father on crusade to prove Afghanistan ambush killed CIA officer
----------------------------
ARLINGTON, Va. The father of a C-I-A officer killed in Afghanistan in 2001 is out to prove his son's death was a premeditated event.

Mike Spann was killed during an uprising at a makeshift prison in November of 2001. American John Walker Lindh struck a plea deal and got a 20-year prison term for his involvement. But Spann's father wants Lindh's plea bargain thrown out and he's now conducting his own investigation into his son's death.

He says the uprising began with a planned grenade attack inside the prison building, rather than a spontaneous scuffle outside where his son was interviewing prisoners. The distinction could be critical in Lindh's quest to get clemency.

2. Even if he proved what he believes here
his chances of nailing Lindh for it are next to none.

There's nothing to indicate Lindh was anything but a pawn and foot soldier. And prisoners of war have no obligation not to attempt to break out anyway - though the people who would be held responsible for the breakout are likely already long dead. And if not, they probably wish they were.

3. Much additional info in this article.
snip

"An intelligence official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the circumstances surrounding the incident at the prison were reviewed. The official said some prisoners burst out of the building firing weapons while Spann and a colleague were interviewing prisoners outside.

In the videotape, which Johnny Spann says he obtained from a Frenchman after the U.S. government initially denied him a copy, Mike Spann is last seen walking away from the prison building one minute before the uprising apparently began.

The next several seconds show a Taliban suspect being interviewed with his back to the building. There is a muffled noise and a series of screams. The suspect appears to twist his head to look over his left shoulder, toward the noise.

At that moment, the film cuts off. The videographer dropped the camera and ran, according to Spann."
