Boeing Issues 9,300 Layoff Notices
http://www.forbes.com/home/feeds/ap/2005/03/11/ap1880351.html

Boeing Co. issued 9,300 layoff notices Friday as part of its sale of commercial aircraft operations in Wichita and Oklahoma to Onex Corp., with those workers being asked to apply for their old jobs with the buyer.

The 60-day notices went to 5,200 hourly and 2,900 salaried production and service workers in Wichita, said Boeing spokesman Dick Ziegler. Engineers have not yet received pink slips.

An additional 1,200 workers also received layoff notices at Boeing's commercial aircraft plants in Tulsa and McAlester, Okla.

The notices are part of the separation and re-employment process required as the Chicago-based aerospace leader transfers assets to Toronto-based Onex. Workers were asked to sign waivers allowing release of their personnel information to be considered for new employment with Onex.

Onex is forming a separate aircraft company in Wichita, which it has temporarily named Midwestern Aircraft Systems until a more permanent name is determined, said Ziegler, who also received a layoff notice.

3. This move may come back to bite Boeing in the ass
Boeing sold this to Onex...but Onex's enterprise is to buy businesses and sell them.

In the old town section of Wichita, sits a EADS America (Airbus) field office. As y'all know, Airbus is itching to get a piece of the US tanker market to replace KC-135. And EADS America want facilities in the US to accomplish this.

I am secretly betting that EADS America will be looking seriously at real estate in Wichita and Tulsa and purchases those facilities from Onex.

Airbus partners with another US military industrial complex, and voila! Boeing is not a shoo-in for replacing the KC-135.

9. Most of this can be traced back...
... to the fraud, insider contract manipulation and mismanagement related to the leasing arrangement that Boeing tried to work through Congress. Boeing tried to threaten the government with job loss when the leasing scheme was in trouble, by announcing they would have to close the Wichita facility, since that was the designated location to do the conversions before and after the lease period.

That didn't work, so they're selling it off. As you say, this place will likely end up in the hands of Airbus. Any way one looks at this, though, it's probably going to mean a significant eventual job loss.

4. That's not the whole story.
Here's the frosting on the cake:

Isn't this just typical. The little guy gets laid off, can't find a job and loses his house. The big guy gets laid off and gets a $2.1 million bonus.

Boeing hands ousted CEO US$2m bonus

SAN FRANCISCO: Just days after demanding the resignation of its chief executive officer and president Harry Stonecipher, Boeing Co said it would hand him a US$2.1mil incentive bonus and keep him on the payroll till April 1.

Stonecipher, 68, was asked by Boeing’s board of directors to step down on Sunday after it discovered he was having an affair with a female executive.

The aerospace giant said it would continue to pay Stonecipher’s salary at an agreed rate of US$1.5mil a year through the end of the month, a decision that would deposit roughly US$60,000 – pre-tax – in his bank account before he officially leaves.

It also said Stonecipher would continue to receive benefits under its pension value plan and supplemental executive retirement plan till April 1. – AFX-Asia

26. Did Anyone Even Bother To READ The Article?!
I don't post on here but I think I need to chime in.

Because the contracts are non-transferrable, every Boeing employee is getting laid off and rehired under an identical contract by Onex. I should know, I work there.

29. And as a former Boeing employee who left in 99...
This was part of the Harry Stonecephier/McDonald-Douglas mindset. Unfortunately Harry did a lot of damage to Boeing AFTER the buyout. Now with HArry gone, it will be a slow road to recovery but a recovery nontheless......

35. This is bad! Boeing used to be one of your best exporters!
It's very hard for people around the world to "boycott" American products if it comes in the shape of a Boeing aircraft! But lately Airbus has started to offer the world, planes better than Boeing. Oz airports are spending billions on upgrading their runways and terminals in order to recieve The Airbus 380, which is made in Toulouse, France. It will probably replace the Boeing 747. Singapore Airways want to fly the first one into Sydney in January 2007!!, although Melbourne will have upgraded before then. But they are only Melbourne!!
