Spanish Muslims issue fatwa against Al-Qaeda's Osama Bin Laden
MADRID (AFX) - Spain's Islamic Commission, which groups the nation's Muslim community, said it was issuing a fatwa against Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden,
'We are going to issue a fatwa (religious decree) against Bin Laden this afternoon,' Mansour Escudero, who leads the Federation of Islamic religious entities (Feeri) and co-secretary general of the Spanish governmenmt-created Commission told AFP.
The Commission invited Spanish-based imams to condemn terrorism at Friday prayers, when the whole country will be remembering the 191 people who were killed in the train blasts and the 1,900 injured a year ago.
The attacks have been blamed on mainly Moroccan Islamic extremists loyal to Bin Laden.
'We have called on imams to make a formal declaration condemning terrorism and for a special prayer for all the victims of terrorism,' Escudero said.
The Commission has also drawn up a document designed to 'thank the Spanish people and the government for their attitude towards Muslims' since last March 11, in particular for not taking 'disproportionate' measures similar to those which the Sept 11 attacks sparked in the US.

2. A fatwa from a VERY minor....
...branch of the Islamic Nation has very little impact, IMHO.

I'm thinking they were bribed or threatened by the Spanish government to say this.

4. Because all muslims are terrorists?
I have no idea why you would make such a claim, but it is certainly not a well-informed one.

3. This is fascinating and a breath of fresh air in a stalemate, but my
reasons for saying this is probably too strange for most people....

I believe that bin Laden worked with the Bush cabal on 9-11 and before.

Finally having a group of Muslims take a stand against bin Laden is a great step.

I don't care if I'm wrong in my theory, this is a good day.

5. "Finally"? These aren't the first Muslims to come out against him.
Although this may be the first fatwa. Quick google:

6. Spanish Clerics Issue Osama Fatwa
http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/03/10/spain.fatwa.osama.ap/index.html

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Muslim clerics in Spain issued what they called the world's first fatwa, or Islamic edict, against Osama bin Laden on Thursday, the first anniversary of the Madrid train bombings, calling him an apostate and urging others of their faith to denounce the al Qaeda leader.

The ruling was issued by the Islamic Commission of Spain, the main body representing the country's 1 million-member Muslim community. The commission represents 200 or so mostly Sunni mosques, or about 70 percent of all mosques in Spain.

15. Nah..
My guess is that they'll be able to do what dumbphuck never bothered to do.

What kind of backing could they expect from the US? They'd be better off getting China's backing.

Its about time that the greater Muslim majority stood up and issued a strong denunciation of Bin Laden's horrific and blasphemous tactics.

19. This is what I'm saying.

Only way this terrorism-situation will be fixed is if muslims clean out their own closets.

That's the way it should be. We can't have some warmongering texas retard strut around in a cowboy hat telling people what to do and who should be bombed, that'll just make terrorists like bin Laden look more sympathetic.

21. Aren't there more than 1 billion Muslims worldwide? How....
...many Muslims are located in Spain? According to the article, the answer is 1 million, isn't it? How does this represent any portion of the "greater Muslim majority"?

I agree that the vast majority of Muslims don't support the methods and goals of Osama and Al Qaeda. But, I'm surprised that ANY Muslim organization or faction would be willing to give the appearance of siding with the US when the US is clearly responsible for the killing of tens of thousands of innocent Muslim civilians in Afghanistan and Iraq. The fact that Iraq had absolutely nothing to do with 911 and/or aiding terrorism is also a major problem, IMHO.

22. Muslims issue fatwa against bin Laden
March 11, 2005

Times
From David Sharrock in Madrid

ON THE eve of the anniversary of mainland Europe’s bloodiest terrorist attack, the Spanish Islamic Commission issued a fatwa yesterday against Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaeda leader.

The commission, a government-backed umbrella group of Islamic associations, made the announcement as Spain prepared to mark the first anniversary today of the Madrid trains massacre with a five-minute silence to remember the victims.

Joining the commemorations in a symbolic act of solidarity, the commission invited Spanish-based imams to condemn terrorism at Friday prayers. It also urged imams to publicise a document designed to “thank the Spanish people and the Government for their attitude towards Muslims” in the past year, in particular for not taking “disproportionate” measures similar to those which the September 11 attacks prompted in the United States.

The entire country is expected to grind to a halt at midday in memory of the 190 commuters who were killed when bombs planted in four trains exploded during the morning rush-hour.

24. (Reuters) Spanish Muslims Issue Fatwa Against Bin Laden
Fri Mar 11, 2005 03:48 PM ET

By Emma Ross-Thomas and Daniel Flynn

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's leading Islamic body has issued a religious order declaring Osama bin Laden to have forsaken Islam by backing attacks such as the Madrid train bombings a year ago.

The Islamic Commission of Spain timed its "fatwa" for Friday to coincide with the first anniversary of the attacks, which killed 191 people and were claimed in the name of al Qaeda in Europe.

The commission's secretary-general, Mansur Escudero, said the fatwa had moral, rather than legal weight, and hoped it would spur similar pronouncements from Muslim groups worldwide.

"We declare ... that Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda organization, responsible for the horrendous crimes against innocent people who were despicably murdered in the March 11 terrorist attack in Madrid, are outside the parameters of Islam," the commission said.
