Many In U.S. Suggest Tax Cut Rollback (poll / Knowledge Networks)
Edited on Wed Mar-09-05 08:01 PM by struggle4progress
(Angus Reid Consultants - CPOD Global Scan) – Many Americans believe some of the tax relief measures passed by George W. Bush in his first term should be abolished, according to a poll by Knowledge Networks for the Program on International Policy Attitudes. 63 per cent of respondents believe rolling back the tax cuts for Americans earning more than $200,000 U.S. a year would help the federal budget deficit. <snip>

The proposed budget includes a deficit of more than $400 billion U.S. Some people say that the government should roll back the tax cuts for those with over $200,000 U.S. incomes that were passed in 2001 and 2003, so the government does not have to borrow so much more money. Others say tax cuts help stimulate the economy and that borrowing more money is not that big of problem. Do you think the government should or should not roll back some of the tax cuts that were passed in 2001 and 2003?

Should 63%
Should not 32%
No answer 5%

As you may know some of the tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 were designed to be temporary and will expire in a few years. Which of the following is closer to your position?

The tax cuts should be made permanent because they are good for the economy 45%
The big deficits the U.S. is running hurt the economy so the tax cuts should be allowed to expire as planned 48%
No answer 7%

Source: Knowledge Networks / Program on International Policy Attitudes
Methodology: Online interviews to 1,182 American adults, conducted from Feb. 18 to Feb. 25, 2005. Margin of error is 2.9 per cent.

1. Someone tell me again why we didn't win last year? Actually, no.
I am not in the mood to hear it. This pisses me off.

3. I wish some Dems would focus on the drastic problem of tax cuts.
They haven't worked, because they were designed to help those who really don't need help in the first place. All it did was to give them more money so they could contribute to those who would help them to get more money again, and again, and again.

Get rid of those tax cuts. They're destroying the backbone of America.

5. The tax cuts ARE working, EXACTLY as planned: increasing the ...
... political power of the wealthy and bankrupting the federal government, a combination which (Republicans expect) will ultimately lead to rule by the wealthy and their corporations, without any government "interference" whatsoever.

93% make the cuts for the rich permanent
1% roll them back
6% no answer.

9. the after tax income for the majority of Americans has DECREASED
Return to progressive taxation. Increase the minimum wage strengthen labor laws, and increase the standard of living for those in the lower 80% of incomes and magic things happen. The budget will be balanced. Social Security is not a problem at all. Savings rates will go up. Bankruptcy rates will go down.
