Lawyer of German-born Turk detained at Guantanamo says he was tortured

BREMEN, Germany - A German-born Turkish man being held at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp was tortured and is being held even though the United States knows he has no connection to al-Qaida or the Hamburg cell of suicide hijackers, his attorney said Wednesday.

The U.S. lawyer for Murat Kurnaz, 22, who is believed to have been seized in Pakistan after traveling there in October 2001, called on the German government to use diplomatic channels to press for his release.

Attorney Bahar Azmy, who has met with Kurnaz for a total of about 30 hours over the past months, said recently obtained declassified statements from the U.S. military intelligence show his innocence.

The documents show interrogators have "no definite link or evidence of a connection to al-Qaida, the Taliban or a specific threat," Azmy told reporters at a press conference. <snip>
