Report: Women 70% of world's poor

Women account for 70% of the 1.3 billion people in the world living in poverty, a labour federation has said in a report issued on International Women's Day.

The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) said the alarming statistic is true despite the fact that more women have entered the workforce than men in recent years.

 
"The global figures show 2.8 billion people working in 2003 and of that 39% - 1.1 billion - were women, the highest proportion ever," said the ICFTU on Tuesday.

The group also said that women face "growing obstacles" in the workplace as the best paying jobs are overwhelmingly reserved for men.

have done 2/3 of the worlds work. Men, of which I am one, have had their chance to run the show and it is quite a mess. It's time for women to take it over. I do not say this lightly. We would not have this level of violence in our culture if it were matrilineal.

groups creating the conditions for the oppression of women, it's not just the white males.

In terms of whiners who have every advantage yet who bristle at any notion that they have an advantage, its a large majority white male. I was referring to the reactionary posts on DU, not to the oppression of women more generally. ;-)
