26. Eruption wasn't massive. Link to webricorders...
http://www.pnsn.org/WEBICORDER/VOLC/welcome.html

This is the same type of buildup witnessed in 2004. I haven't been keeping a close eye on the situation but there were reports several days ago of movement along the subduction zone. This buildup is most likely associated with the recent subduction zone activity.

Baker is showing some movement in the last week, probably also associated with the subduction zone.

The good news is..Rainier is quiet.

34. Without warning Mount St. Helens emits cloud of ash
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7132927/

MOUNT ST. HELENS, Wash. - Mount St. Helens released a towering plume of ash Tuesday, its most significant emission in months but one that seismologists did not believe heralded any major eruption.

The volcano has vented ash and steam since last fall, when thousands of small earthquakes marked a seismic reawakening of the 8,364-foot mountain.

Large Plume Billows From Mount St. Helens
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20050309/D88N77M80.html

MOUNT ST. HELENS, Wash. (AP) - Mount St. Helens released a towering plume of ash Tuesday, its most significant emission in months but one that seismologists did not believe heralded any major eruption.

The volcano has vented ash and steam since last fall, when thousands of small earthquakes marked a seismic reawakening of the 8,364-foot mountain.

Late afternoon television footage showed the plume billowing thousands of feet into the air, then drifting slowly to the northeast.

The ash explosion happened around 5:25 p.m., about an hour after a 2.0 magnitude quake rumbled on the east side of the mountain, said Bill Steele, coordinator of the Pacific Northwest Seismograph Network at the University of Washington.

39. Mt Pinatubo's eruption had an initial blast that was bigger than that
Edited on Wed Mar-09-05 10:28 AM by lebkuchen
Pinatubo let off steam for weeks before it set off a beautiful mushroom cloud in the a.m. that reached into the jet stream and was carried off to sea. Only a little dusting of ash fell during the initial eruption, known as "the appetizer." Volcanologists said the main course was about to be served, and it was, three days later, with an eruption ten times that of Mt. St. Helens in 1980. There was no daylight for 24 hours. The eruption created its own weather pattern, and ash fell constantly with the rain and wind of an approaching typhoon. Added to the constant tremors, it was very unnerving.

Since Pinatubo hadn't erupted in 600 years or so, the volcanologists were expecting a huge eruption. It's fortunate that Mt. St. Helens goes off every few years, so that it's not so cataclysmic, yet beautiful to watch and appreciate for its magnificence. It's awesome, in the purest sense of the word, to see an eruption, no matter what the size.

Appetizers:

40. US volcano Mount St Helens erupts
BBC

The Mount St Helens volcano has erupted in the US, sending a cloud of ash and smoke nearly 40,000 feet (12,000m) into the air.

The eruption comes after weeks of heightened seismic activity, marked by tremors and mudslides.

It is not believe to pose any threat to people in the sparsely-populated area of Washington state.

A eruption 25 years ago killed 57 people and coated nearby towns in a layer of ash.

44. Earthquakes Continue To Rumble Under Mount St. Helens
POSTED: 4:56 pm PST March 9, 2005

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Hundreds of small earthquakes have rumbled under Mount St. Helens since Tuesday as steam continues to vent at the top. The biggest quake registered a magnitude 2.6 on Wednesday.

Scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey's volcano observatory here were getting ready to head home when the squiggly line on the computer which tracks seismic activity at Mount St. Helens suddenly turned a solid black.

"It just kept on going and going and going," said research hydrologist Jon Major, referring to the seismic line which registered Tuesday's earthquake measuring a magnitude of 2.0.

Outside the building, the mountain -- 50 miles northeast -- was belching steam and ash seven miles high, signaling the most powerful blast since Mount St. Helens reawakened last fall. <snip>

46. Earthquakes in the area
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsUS/Maps/US10/42.52.-130.-120.html

There's also a research ship from the Univ. of Washington headed out to the area to take a look at the Juan de Fuca ridge that runs about 100 miles off shore off the Oregon and Washington coasts. The current thinking is that there's active lava flows building up the ridge associated with the quakes there and the movements along the plate are providing fresh magma for Mt. St. Helens.
