GOP Senators Ready to Start Fighting for Pickering Nomination Again
Republicans are gearing up for a second tough nomination fight for White House judicial nominee Charles Pickering, the first of President Bush's picks for the bench to be rejected when Democrats controlled the Senate.

The Senate Judiciary Committee said Tuesday that Pickering, a U.S. District Court judge, would be on the agenda for the committee's next confirmation hearing.

"It is time for the committee to give his nomination the fair consideration it deserves," Judiciary Committee spokeswoman Margarita Tapia said.

The reaction was immediate from liberal groups.

"Judge Pickering's disturbing record exemplifies this administration's efforts to appoint judges who are far out of the mainstream to lifetime seats on the federal bench," said Ralph Neas, president of People For the American Way. "We are aware of nothing that has altered Judge Pickering's record since the committee's vote to reject his confirmation to the Fifth Circuit."

3. I smell a Lott manuevering behind this.

Just read an article about Lott and how he found a way to be a thorn in Bush's side, because of his demotion. Looks like it paid off. His boy Pickering is back in town.

On edit: Didn't Lott get into a position which allowed him to change filibuster rules?

4. He can't change filibuster rules by himself
but he is now chairman of the Rules and Administration committee, which has jurisdiction over all rule changes. Of course, they still have to be approved by the full Senate.

12. judges
Someday the Republicans are going to look back on the Bush years and wonder how they could have been so goddam stupid. Instead of pushing for wingnut judges and far right appointees to government positions, they could have taken a more moderate tack and quietly dominated the national agenda for the coming decades. They had an opportunity to institutionalize the Republican party, to make it absolutely invincible. They have the White House, the Senate, the House, truckloads of money, and a President who enjoyed stratospheric post-9/11 popularity. They are in the process of pissing all that away, and they will have no one but themselves to blame.

13. One definition of insanity
Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

But keep sticking that fork in the electrical outlet, boys. Maybe this time it won't throw you clear across the room.

This attempted rules change should be on the list along with the recall, the recount, and redistricting.
