Note to Press: Gallup finds Americans Troubled by Moral Climate
------------------------------
By E&P Staff
Published: March 08, 2005 2:00 PM ET
------------------------------
NEW YORK In taking a look today at what it called its “morality meter,” the Gallup Poll organization revealed that 59% of Americans are somewhat (29%) or very (30%) dissatisfied with the United States' moral and ethical climate. Only 7% are “very satisfied,” with 33% somewhat satisfied.

But what do Americans consider the "moral and ethical climate"? Contrary to what many may believe, it includes a wide range of issues, Gallup reported, based on follow-up interviews with some of the poll's respondents: Sexual and violent content in television and movies, racial prejudice, rampant divorce, corporate scandals, gay rights (pro and con), plagiarism in schools, and more.

(snip)

When explaining why he is "somewhat satisfied" with the moral and ethical climate in America today, an 18-year-old from Texas says, "Although I still think there is a lot more work to be done, I'm encouraged that the government has started to crack down on unethical business practices. And I am also glad Americans are beginning to accept gays as equals."

A 58-year-old man from Florida who is "very dissatisfied" with America's moral and ethical climate said: "Corporations are not accountable for their actions; the bankruptcy laws are too lenient; too many credit cards are offered to people who can't afford to get into debt. It seems the more money you have, the more you can get away with in this country," he said. "No one's trying to help the average American anymore."

5. Or the hundreds of thousands of innocents American troops have killed
Naw, probably not, it's just a bunch of brown skinned ferriners after all. Now "lenient" bankruptcy laws, that there is something to get morally upset about:eyes:

14. Judging from the rest of the man's response
I think he was referring to how the bankruptcy laws are too lenient for corporations, not individuals.

17. No, talking point. Many down here have been amazed at the
number of bankruptcies caused by medical bills incurred by people with medical health insurance. One person I know that filed bankruptcy because of medical bills was amazed when I told her the static. She thought she was one of the few, not the vast majority.

7. Yeah right. Unless the TV tells the Imperial Subjects of Amerika
something at least 12 times, it simply doesn't register.

25. Very Timely
This is my letter to the editor which should be runing this week. My sentiments exactly.

Where are the voices from the Moral Majority who voted for Bush? Why the silence on matters of abuse at Abu Ghraib, reports of the CIA flying humans without charge or representation to other countries to be tortured, with one man boiled alive? What about Bush’s assault on the poor, and his hoped for assault on the elderly with his SS scheme? I no longer recognize America under this supposed Christian president. I do not see Christ in any of these actions, surely he would weep over the barbaric cruelty we have thrust upon so many of his children with our hateful rhetoric, bombs and bullets. My conscious is clear, I have never condoned these atrocities or this President. America has become what it has always loathed, apparently with the blessing of the Moral Majority.

9. hmm
Did they leave out the completely immoral behavior of GW Bush and Co., leaders who consistently lie and act as sockpuppets for the corporo-fascist interests that control them and the media, and who are nefariously and immorally waging war on the poor and working classes?

Now -that's - immoral.

10. What people say and do are two different things
A few years back, a local theater owner in this Southern bible-belt town decided to show only family-oriented G-rated movies. He was praised by everyone for his decision, and the story even made the national press. Well, after a year or so, he was forced to go back to showing the standard fare because no one came to see the family values pictures.

16. I'm troubled by the immoral climate with bankruptcy bill
today, and getting screwed on Soc Sec if Bush and the repubs have their way, and cutting food stamps for 300,000 people so the top 1% of Americans can have their tax cut. Yes, the moral climate today disturbs me.

>Contrary to what many may believe, it includes a wide range of issues

What?!? You mean it doesn't just concern abortion and gay marriage? You mean that... liberals have morals, TOO?!? Where is it a widely held belief that liberals are amoral? In the press? In the 50% of the country that voted for Bush? Please. Tell me. I want to know where this is coming from you fucking hacks.

23. Rupert Murdoch (Fox) has fostered and exploited this for years
At first glance, Fox appears to be wildly hypocritical: openly stumping for rightwing politicans while producing soft-core porn "reality" series. Those rightwingers usually mouth the same "family values" bullshit to frame the argument. They trash Hollywood or any other convenient target to show why it is imperative that they be elected to stop the downward slide into Sodom and Gomorrah. Meanwhile, Fox is showing the sleaziest, most titillating shows out there to help reinforce this image. Smut sells big and Murdoch gets rich from showing "Temptation Island" and the rest of their tits-and-ass double entendre-loaded dreck. Even though people claim to be disgusted by the availability of this stuff to children, they then watch the news on Fox where right wing "moralists" drone on. When Murdoch's right wing friends win election, he then gets the telecommunications and tax bills he wants to keep the scam going.

24. What a bullshit question!!!!!
It's one of those ones that can mean anything and mean nothing, all at the same time. One man's moral failure is another one's good time!

I'm bothered by the absolute lack of integrity in government, the senseless deaths of our young as a result of a foolish invasion, our complete lack of scruples as a nation....but hey, if I answer that question, I'm counted with the idiots who think an old floppy titty with a bottlecap on it is signaling the beginning of the end times!

Gallup needs to gallop off and do something useful for a change...they're beyond worthless!! You can be sure that this poll will be cited by the right, ignoring the devil in the details...
