Ukraine's Security Chief Says Ex-Official Killed Himself
Edited on Sat Mar-05-05 08:29 PM by Rose Siding
The chief of Ukraine's security service said Saturday that the country's former interior minister, Yuri F. Kravchenko, had shot himself twice in the head on Friday, refuting speculation that he had been killed by someone else.

The official announcement and a note found in Mr. Kravchenko's pocket, the security chief added, left little doubt that Mr. Kravchenko had committed suicide.

14. Description from the end of the article:
The first shot went through his chin and out his mouth, Mr. Turchinov said. The second bullet entered his right temple.

6. Perhaps one of Kuchma's goons got to him....
He may have been killed by someone who didn't want him to open his mouth. If true, then I'm glad Yushchenko won and is cracking down on the corruption of the previous regime.

7. Yushchenko is already backing out on his promise to bring Ukraines...
...troops home from Iraq. That was supposed to be priority number one. Guess it ain't that important any more? Meet your new boss Ukrainians. Same as the old boss.

9. Probably this one:
Ukraine Says Troops May Stay In Iraq Until Year's End

Warsaw (RFE/RL) -- Ukraine's defense minister today said his country might leave some troops in Iraq two months beyond its October deadline for pulling out.

Defense Minister Anatoliy Gritsenko, speaking in Warsaw after a meeting with his Polish counterpart, Jerzy Szmajdzinski, stressed that Ukraine will not leave the coalition, "but it is changing the character of its mission."

Ukraine on 1 March approved the pullout of its 1,650-strong contingent in a phased withdrawal between 15 March and October. Its troops are responsible for security and training new Iraqi forces in the Wasit Province, which borders Iran.

Gritsenko today said that a last group of some 900 troops may remain in Iraq until December, but said the issue "is still open for discussion and will be consulted on with other nations."

11. I was referring to the toop pullout itself, not his promise...
It still seems that they are committed to withdrawing their troops, just maybe at a slower rate than originally anticipated. I'll reserve judgment until action is taken in one way or another. Obviously, as the original story in this thread indicated, Ukraine may be facing more daunting problems than just the Iraq situation.
