NYT - New Poll Finds Bush Priorities Are Out of Step With Americans

New Poll Finds Bush Priorities Are Out of Step With Americans
By ADAM NAGOURNEY and JANET ELDER

Americans say President Bush does not share the priorities of most of the country on either domestic or foreign issues, are increasingly resistant to his proposal to revamp Social Security and say they are uneasy with Mr. Bush's ability to make the right decisions about the retirement program, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll. The poll underscores just how little headway Mr. Bush has made in his effort to build popular support as his proposal for overhauling Social Security struggles to gain footing in Congress. At the same time, there has been an increase in respondents who say that efforts to restore order in Iraq are going well, even as an overwhelming number of Americans say Mr. Bush has no clear plan for getting out of Iraq.

On Social Security, 51 percent said permitting individuals to invest part of their Social Security taxes in private accounts, the centerpiece of Mr. Bush's plan, was a bad idea, even as a majority said they agreed with Mr. Bush that the program would become insolvent near the middle of the century if nothing was done. The number who thought private accounts were a bad idea jumped to 69 percent if respondents were told that the private accounts would result in a reduction in guaranteed benefits. And 45 percent said Mr. Bush's private account plan would actually weaken the economic underpinnings of the nation's retirement system.

In a sign of the political obstacles confronting the White House, a majority of those surveyed said they would support raising the amount of income subject to Social Security payroll tax above its current ceiling of $90,000, an idea floated by Mr. Bush but shot down by Republican Congressional leaders. Yet there is strong resistance to other options available to Mr. Bush and lawmakers to repair the system, in particular to raising the retirement age or making participation voluntary. Notwithstanding Mr. Bush's argument that citizens should be given more control over their retirement savings, almost four out of five respondents said it was the government's responsibility to assure a decent standard of living for the elderly.

<snip>

Four months after Mr. Bush won a solid re-election over Senator John Kerry, 63 percent of respondents say the president has different priorities on domestic issues than most Americans. Asked to choose among five domestic issues facing the country, respondents rated Social Security third, behind jobs and health care. And nearly 50 percent said Democrats were more likely to make the right decisions about Social Security, compared with 31 percent who said the same thing about Republicans.

much more......

This is been obvious for a very long time. Americans poll close to Democrats on issues, but many of those same individuals vote Republican. Go figure.

51. some thimes I don't think they know they are not Republicans
A friend of my son, told me her parents were Republican but that she was a democrat. I asked her how she knew? She said she had filled out a questionnaire at school and her results confirmed which party supported issues that mattered to her. I betcha If all Americans took the 'test' they would be be surprised that they don't support big business, the military/industrial complex,or imposing a state religion on us. (you get my drift)....over what's good for the common people

60. Democrats have an unfair reputation
of being bleeding-heart, tax-happy, frivolous spenders. Democrats are gay hippies, snotty urban hipsters, or four-eyed, atheist bookworms. This is how FOX news, and other right-wing nutjobs have portrayed us. They lay it on thick. They try to smear the Democrat image.

46. its even worse if he did win
the polls show Bush voters did not know and did not agree with Bush on several important issues.

They were either one issue voters (gay marriage/abortion) OR they did not know what Bush's positions were. I think the latter and for that I blame the media. But to be fair, the media has been under attack for 40 years as being "liberal". To "maintain" credibility it bent over backwards to "show the other side".

Now they have just become corporate hacks. Whichever candidate the military industrial complex supports will get favorable press, any candidate opposing the military industrail complex will be made into a villian by the media. Oh yeah, with the help of Karl Rove.

Of course, some GOP operatives have admitted they kept yelling about the media being biased just so it would go right. Wouldn't it be nice to be so convinced of your position that the ends justified the means? That's where I see the similarity to Hitler and other true believers.

I think that poll is the sound of a national hangover talking.

"Still, 42 percent now say that Mr. Bush would have been better off trying to counter the threat of North Korea before invading Iraq, compared with 45 percent who think Mr. Bush was correct to focus first on Iraq."

-snip-

"nearly 50 percent said Democrats were more likely to make the right decisions about Social Security, compared with 31 percent who said the same thing about Republicans."

25. 42% are wrong.
Iraq appears to be dropping off the news and, like Afghanistan, fading in the dust that Bush kicks up as he heads towards a new target; either Syria or Iran. On the other hand, given his "mandate", he may be planning a double front attack. Take your pick but North Korea isn't on the monitor.

...BushCo is far too anxious to revamp SS, which makes me think his priorities are with the Banking/Wall Street lobby rather than what's best for us.

I worked for the Gov in my early 20's, and was thrilled I could take my retirement in cash when I left. Bought me a shiney new Mustang with it.

That's the problem with his um, 'plan'. Whatever it is, does anyone know?

36. Latest NY Times/CBS Poll show Bush's ideas "Out of Touch"
WASHINGTON (AFP) - A majority of Americans say President George W. Bush (news - web sites) has a different set of priorities to theirs and oppose his plan to reform the pension system but are more optimistic about Iraq (news - web sites), according to a New York Times/CBS News poll.

Bush's approval rating remained unchanged at 49 percent, while 53 percent felt efforts to bring order to Iraq were going well, up from 41 percent a month ago. Those who disapproved of Bush's Iraq policy fell from 55 to 50 percent, while those who approved rose from 40 to 45 percent.

Sixty-three percent of the 1,100 adults consulted Thursday through Monday said Bush had a different set of priorities on domestic issues and put jobs and health care ahead of reforming the Social Security (news - web sites) system.

Fifty-eight percent also felt they did not share the same foreign policy priorities as the president: 59 percent said the US should not try to change dictatorships to democracies and stay out of other countries' affairs

The country agrees w/ Bush on social issues for the most part. But it seems THEY want the Dems to do THIER job. IE. They want the Dems to keep Bush in line from imperial wars, SS, budget cuts, etc etc. So instead of actually doing what they should of on Nov 2nd based on 2 men kissing and "the bad Arabs will attack us", NOW they realize, opps, Bush is a little nuts and we need the Dems to keep him in line, even though we STILL support him.

And that freak in the White House is trapsing around the country, at our expense mind you, to promote this not yet written bill. I bet he's got some land in Florida to sell too.
