Bush to Consult with Rice on Iran Incentives

Wed Mar 2, 2005 09:41 AM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush was to consult with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday on her talks with European officials about how to coax Iran to give up nuclear ambitions, a senior administration official said.

Bush is believed to be close to deciding whether to join Europe in offering incentives to Iran, including membership of the World Trade Organization, in exchange for Tehran's agreement to give up nuclear weapons.

It would mark a significant shift in strategy for Bush, who has been reluctant to consider economic incentives for Iran to avoid being seen as rewarding bad behavior. He has talked about taking Iran to the U.N. Security Council for possible sanctions.

Rice, just back from London where she attended a Middle East conference and held talks with European officials, was due at the White House in the afternoon.

4. sounds just like Clinton's N Korea strategy
which has been much maligned by RW talking heads. I wonder what they will say if this carrot and stick approach is adopted.
