U.S. officials still angry about Canada's missile defence decision
WASHINGTON (CP) - There were clear signs Tuesday that U.S. officials are still angry about Canada's missile defence decision, although they tried to put a good public face on cross-border relations.

And while a planned NAFTA summit is still on this month between President George W. Bush, Prime Minister Paul Martin and Mexico's Vicente Fox, some wondered how far Canada will get now in pushing for a faster way to solve difficult trade disputes.

A big delegation led by International Trade Minister Jim Peterson arrived Tuesday for a one-day blitz of Capitol Hill just as an official revealed that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is delaying a trip to Canada because Martin said "no" to the missile shield, a project Bush has been aggressively pushing.

Still, signs of displeasure in the U.S. have been building since last week's announcement in Canada, with some American Media organizations calling it a blunt rebuff of Bush that will likely have consequences.

The influential Wall Street Journal published an angry editorial this week, saying Canadians are freeloaders who count on U.S. defence protection without giving anything in return.

3. How inconvenient for the United States that other nations --
-- have minds of their own and constituencies with minds of THEIR own.

And how inconvenient that the Canadians don't wish to assist a few U.S. companies in their goal to become filthy rich on these contracts.

Yes, we'll have to invade. Teach those damned Canadians a little lesson about obeyance. We'll close off the borders! We'll stop ordering Canadian bacon on pizzas! We'll lock Gordon Lightfoot in Guantanamo!

From WHOM?

Only country that ever attacked Canada is south of our border

We have good relations* with Russia and China, the only real possible military threat to the West, - (*more than I can say for our Southern neighbours)

Truth be told -

We are probably SAFER the further we distance ourselves from the United States,

ESPECIALLY it's foreign policies

Besides that,

We just don't like bullies!!

9. Perhaps Canada should offer to host the Statue of Liberty.
It would be a generous gesture from our northern neighbor “freeloaders” to get that now embarrassing gift from those… um, Freedom people, off of our land. It would also help to scrub any notions of freedom and liberty from our current history.

Come to think of it, maybe we could put up the Constitution and the Bill of Rights on eBay to help pay down the deficit. They’re clearly becoming obsolete these days. And it seems like we’re developing a market for new democracies that need these things. Hey it’s good for a little over 200 years! Of course we can’t be responsible for any bad feedback if you end up with one party rule and no checks and balances.

One final caveat, your press is your own situation.

14. I thought US officials LOVE FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY.
So they don't, really. They only SAY they do and that's only when other nations kow-tow to whatever the US wants.

NEWSFLASH: that ain't FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY.

17. This is not the first time Canada has said NO to MDS...
we also said no to Reagan when he wanted us to be part of Star Wars (the old 'version' of MDS) and that was when we had a CONSERVATIVE majority government. (The PM at that time was the sleaze bag Mulroney) Canadians have been against missiles in space regardless of who asks. Canadian parliamentary system allows us to turf our government in between elections and thank goodness for that, it causes our elected politicians to be somewhat accountable.
