Bush Favors 'all Drunks Are Welcome' Policy for Religious Groups Getting Federal Money

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush on Tuesday dismissed criticism that his plan to steer public money to religious charities might discriminate against people who did not share their beliefs, saying those groups should have an "all drunks are welcome" policy.

Speaking to more than 250 religious leaders invited by the White House, Bush vented his frustration that Congress has not approved the idea he first offered soon after he took office to let religious charities spend taxpayer money.

In a speech at a Washington hotel, Bush took on what he described as a government culture "unfriendly" to religious groups.

"Charitable choice is something I've supported every year, and every year it's got stuck," Bush said. "There's kind of a consistent pattern there."

1. "There's kind of a consistent pattern there."
Yes, it's called "Constitutional Law".

17. There you go again, being intelligent as you deal with facts. . .
How in the world is Georgie going to get what he wants done with you making such a logical case against it? :-)

3. AA has had an "all drunks welcome" policy for a buck a meeting
for decades. These grants are not for AA. They are for abstinance training, buildings, faith based salaries and so on. Yup, we are supporting the churches now too.

6. AA does NOT require ANY donation ...it is ABSOLUTELY free....
unless you feel like donating something.

8. Don't recall saying they require it. Usual donation $1 if you have it
or want to donate to the coffee fund.

4. Maybe if Bush had gone to AA
instead of Billy Graham our country wouldn't be in the mess it's in today.

5. I have a confession to make
They played the clip on NPR and I thought it was funny! Not like usual when I laugh AT him, but I was actually laughing WITH him!

"If you're the Methodist church and you sponsor an alcohol treatment center, they can't say only Methodists, only Methodists who drink too much can come to our program," Bush said. "All drunks are welcome, is what the sign ought to say."

I was ashamed because I knew better, and because of the bigger picture with this issue, but I laughed.

Please don't hate me!

7. WTF?!
'all Drunks Are Welcome'

I see how his appintments are made.

Now, in Slashdot tradition, let's say it loud and proud:
All your drunks are belong to Jesus.

Why force religion on people who need help? If they need spiritual help, do that instead of forcing a religion that makes promises and nothing else? Hell, let's get an interfaith group formed to help alcoholics kick the bottle and back to life. They need help and understanding, not forced convert or hear how sinful they are (we all make mistakes).

12. How about "All coke heads are welcome"? "All sexaholics are welcome"?
Or is it just because bush has a certain fondness for drunks because he identifies with them.

Now if only they would have a church sign that read "All warmongerers are welcome," perhaps he'd feel right at home.

15. Of course all drunks are welcome
Isn't a fresh supply of drunks needed to run religious-based 12-step programs?
