Biden declines to sign letter for Gannon inquiry, while Kerry signs
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 10:49 AM by Califooyah Operative

Biden declines to sign letter for Gannon inquiry, while Kerry signs
Headline at
www.RawStory.com

Edit Story is up:
In seeming break with his public comments on discredited White House reporter Jeff Gannon, Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE), the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, has declined to sign a letter calling for an inquiry, RAW STORY has learned. Meanwhile, Senator John Kerry (D-MA) has signed on.
..........
Biden press secretary Chip Unruh said the senator was not given enough time to carefully consider the letter circulated by Democratic whip Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL). Unruh expressed frustration that his office was given only a few hours to seek the senator’s opinion.
.........
“Senator Kerry will be signing,” April Boyd, Kerry’s deputy press secretary, said.
............
“Given the unprecedented level of security in Washington since 9/11, it is troubling that that a non-journalist using a false name and working for a sham news organization could have gained regular access to the White House for such an extended period of time,” Durbin wrote.

54. Yeah. He's a real disappointment more often than not.
Every damn time I almost warm up to him, I turn around and get slapped in the face OR get a dose of cold water thrown in my face by him.

Too, he's such a pro-Iraq war hawk I don't know why I even allow myself to get just a little seduced by him every now and then.

18. I just printed it out and put it on the wall in my office.
We got talked to about putting stuff up on our office doors, but they didn't say anything about inside my office... :)

Right next to my Robert Frost, Aldo Leopold, Maya Angelou, and Thoreau quotes.

50. That would be a good idea...
here is what I have on my wall:

"There is nothing in which birds differ more from man than the way in which they can build and yet leave a landscape as it was before".
-Robert Lynd

"We abuse the land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect".
-Aldo Leopold

"What good is a house if you haven't got a decent planet to put it on".
-Henry David Thoreau

"A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song".
-Maya Angelou

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

- Robert Frost

What Kerry's office said
“Senator Kerry will be signing,” April Boyd, Kerry’s press secretary, said.

“There’s more screening to get into a Bush for President rally than the White House press room,” Boyd added. “A Girl Scout troop can’t even go on a public tour of the White House, but a Republican Party right wing activist of sketchy origins got daily West Wing access? This latest

scandal makes Armstrong Williams look like a saint by comparison.”

65. Why support the RW agenda?
This photo is disgusting and inappropriate. Also, if you even read the original message Kerry not only signed, but gave a very strong comment on this subject. What does it accomplish to demean one of the strongest Democratic voices available? (Esp on this issue, given the circumstances that Gannon was used against him, his outspoken position on this issue is more valuable than any one else's. I can't think of anyone who can more capably keep the moral high ground on this issue.)

Yet you prefer to bash Biden and continue to mock Kerry.

99. The reason I said that this photo supports the RW agenda
is that among other things they have tried to show Democrats and Kerry in particular as not as manly as Bush. (Never mind that Kerry played in 4 sports in college and Bush was a cheerleader in Prep school.) Think about the "metrosexual", manicures moment that Fox news made up, the orange tan before the first debate etc.

I realize you metaphor is different, but it is offensive.

21. Here Ya Go
MAHER: I want to just ask this question. If this was the Clinton White
House and this story broke, tell me an angry mob with torches would not
be involved. Why do the Republicans get a pass on this stuff, when you
know this is impeachable with the other party?

BIDEN: The press. The bottom line is that, why isn't every major network
in the country investigating a security breach? Forget anything else.
How could the F.B.I....seventeen years I was Chairman of the Judiciary
Committee and the Ranking Member, I read more F.B.I. reports than I ever
wanted to know. How could that happen and no one have any idea who this
guy was? Forget everything else, assume he went in there and he was a
saint. How could that be? We should know that.

There should be, the Judiciary Committee of the United States Senate
should be investigating it, the House Judiciary Committee should be
investigating it. And if it were the other party in charge, it would be
investigated.

To which Biden answered,

28. Biden has always shown his colors
As an oldie having watched and listened to Biden during the Clarence Thomas, Anita Hill hearings, and observing Biden again in numerous other hearings, he totally comes across as the typical politician, playing for his own power base yet tossing in a few words to appear as a broker for the people. He apparently plays the game well according to DC ethics and he and his hair plugs have survived all the in-fighting, yet I have seen little if anything that he has accomplished for the Democrats or for our Nation.

I wouldn't vote for Biden for the local dog catcher and certainly don't consider him presidential material.

Edwards is fighting for the poor.

Kerry's 2005 record so far has been good, plus he's fighting for health care, the soldiers' benefits, and getting Rummy outta there.

Al Gore's been fighting against the war and for the environment.

Lieberman...cough...

Hillary ... cough,cough...

(I'll leave it up to the constituents of those two.)

And well, Biden talks a good game, but the votes haven't been there. I don't know what to think about him. He might be a publicity hound. I dunno.

The DLC had their chance(s), and gave us two losing tickets that wouldn't fight for the victory(i.e. us) and also via Bill Clinton, we were blessed with death of local flavor from the FTC; the WTO, NAFTA, welfare reform, and the protection of marriage act, for starters.

it's time for some new blood, new ideas, and a new focus.

22. They may never post an article...is this fair to Mr. Biden?
...lots of times Raw Story will run a headline and never follow up with an article. In some cases, I am guessing it is because the story changed or there lead was wrong. Once they have a story available, it is usually a 'Raw Story' article (and we all know 'Raw Story' doesn't have a political agenda, right?). Anyhow, I am not sure if it is fair to Mr. Biden; Biden may change his mind or the story may be up prematurely and without good sourcing, you never know. I saw the headline and frankly, in all fairness, I would have waited for it to hit another source before posting.

25. well,
I took it and posted it like any other breaking headline, same thing happens if cnn says something without backing it up right away. Rawstory is responsible for their content, if they're being shady, you should take it up with them. It's up to the people on here to make the best judgment on this, just like any other story from any other source.

I'm not flaming biden over this, just passing along a headline.

If the story changes, i'm sure we'll find out.

30. You may have done right...
...in posting the story. It may turn out that Biden deserves the two-faced label he will get from people reading this. But what if it doesn't? As you can see, his contact #'s are already up and I am sure he is already getting flamed with calls from DU people. One other thing, would you post a headline from 'Drudge Report' without a back-up link? I don't want to be hard on you, I am sure you only have the best intentions. I think the Moderators have a little to do with my irritation. I have seen them allow links to headlines and biased news sources; and other times I see them pull the post's. What barometer they use, I don't know?

Did anyone listen to Biden in the committee hearings on Iraq, prior the invasion. Biden was doing everything to ensure the Idiot-King Bush would have his war.

38. Biden said he did not have enough time to review it...
...it doesn't sound like he's lying. This is a pretty big deal. Just because others are signing on doesn't mean he should do it without studying it. If the Dem's started signing everything before the read it, we would be acting more like the Repukes. I am sorry, but I will have to take the unpopular step of saying Biden has every right not to sign the letter until he can back it up.

By the way, whether he signs the letter or not, he did more for the cause by speaking up on HBO than most others. Let's not deny him that.

Truthpusher wrote,

Then how does it look when he does one thing and does another. People will say that he doesn't follow through. Then the US-State-controlled-corporate-media will set him up with a question concerning such. Then Biden will sound out more double speak.

I think it does more to undermine his position, whatever that may be.

As far as not having time to review it ... well ... not only is that one of the famous/infamous put off lines, but it contradicts why he spouted off about it in the first place.

48. Exactly, it undermines 'his' position....
...he must have thought it was important enough to risk that. However, the media creates a force for change (as much as we hate it). If the media does not pick up on this it may very well lose its momentum. Biden did a great deal for keeping this afloat. Even the Today show benefited the cause by interviewing Gannon, it all helps.

32. This is the letter I faxed Biden yesterday
I am writing you to ask that you sign on to Senator Durbin's letter
regarding an inquiry into the Gannon/Guckert media plant. This is
something that needs to be addressed. The propaganda that is coming
out daily from this administration is disgraceful and the payola is courtesy of our tax dollars.

The Democrats need to stick together on this issue and MANY issues. WE
MUST BE A UNIFIED PARTY! This is just the tip of the iceberg. We must
forge ahead and keep all of these breaches of American trust out in the
open if the Democrats hope to regain either the House or the Senate in
2006. If we don't, all of America loses!

You stated on the Bill Maher show this weekend that you would support an investigation thru the Senate Judiciary if it was possible, but
that it wasn't since the Dems are in the minority. Here's your chance to show you really meant what you said. Senators Durbin and Lautenberg should have the whole Democratic party behind them on this effort.

We don't need weak, middle of the road, "play nice" democrats representing us. This is a fight for the future of our nation, democracy itself and all the ideals that Americans hold dear, that
have made this country great in the past, AND it requires that you,
as a representative of the people, step up to bat.

The Dems lost representation in Zell Miller, Joe Lieberman and Ken
Salazar. As a citizen of Delaware, and a Biden voter since I could cast a ballot, I hope we don't lose you too.

"Asked why Biden would express such unequivocal support for an investigation and yet not sign Durbin’s letter, Unruh told RAW STORY that the senator was not given time to sign, and felt that no investigation would take place anyway since Republicans control both Houses of Congress."

Not given time? Gee, maybe they thought he was a given, since he was on national tv saying he supported an investigation?

And an investigation wouldn't happen anyway? Love that old can-do spirit!

Biden's playing some kind of game here, and it ain't helping his credibility.

which by the way includes more than NYC. Guiliani (ex-mayor) and Kerik (never was) are not at the same level as a U.S. Senator. Rudy had his chance and his light is dimming. I think it goes without saying however that there is corruption at EVERY level of government.

For example, without being specific about where, a local town just had several people on it's board appoint there own spouses as their "secretaries". These are paid positions and they simply submit the hours they "claim" to work and get paid.

Pitiful.

is that he can be tenacious at times, but he's a bit of a show-boater.

It's strange in retrospect to think about Biden getting called to task for plagarism in the late 80's. Can you imagine a scandal errupting for Bush on the same charges? It would never happen.

San Francisco Chronicle
Who is Jeff Gannon?
February 24, 2004

snip

As Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., pointed out during a meeting with The Chronicle editorial board Wednesday, the Guckert case, at a minimum, suggests "sheer, friggin' incompetence,'' in terms of White House security. Biden said Congress should investigate this potential breach of security, but he acknowledged such a probe would never occur with Republicans in control of the House and Senate.

You've been a hero several times with your comments but not much on follow through. This is just the latest of many opportunities where most of the forum feels you sell out in the interest of bipartisanship. We're past that point now - it's time to fight. I'm telling you -- watch for the support for people like Dean, Conyers and Boxer......it's real and growing daily. Just because you're outnumbered doesn't mean you can't at least take on a fight. Don't be afraid to lose as long as you're speaking out for the TRUTH!

We have followed, with growing alarm, the story about the fake journalist, James Guckert, who was able to receive daily access to the White House. Now it appears he may have also received access to inside information regarding Valerie Plame's status as a covert CIA agent. What started as an amusing and titillating little story has now blown into what appears to be serious manipulation of the press by the White House. We strongly urge you to add your signature to the petition now being circulated by Senators Reid and Durbin asking for an investigation into this matter. Should this investigation be suppressed due to partisan politics, it calls into question the integrity of Congress itself.

Sure, Biden "spoke out" on HBO, however, today, when ACTION is necessary-Biden comes up EMPTY! How long does it take to read a letter and either agree or disagree? He sure showed himself to be pumped up on the issue Saturday evening. This letter has been in circulation for over 24 hours. I don't buy Unruh's "frustration"..."a few hours to seek the senator's opinion"? I believe he gave the entire nation his "OPINION" on Saturday evening's show. Apparently, he has changed his mind. But why? Only Biden knows the real answer to that question. Peace!

The republicans best friend. There is nothing worse (politically speaking) than a conservative who masqerades as a liberal. Biden is the worst example. Pukes hate him because he has a (D) next to his name, but he is a great friend to them. If he were to switch parties: a) dems would never miss him, and b) he would fit right in with the other Pukes. I am from Delaware and I never fail to vote for ANYONE who runs against him. I would much rather have a conservative Puke than a right-wing dem. Cynical bigots suck, but hypocrits are unbearable.

If Biden had an (R) next to his name no one would be calling him too liberal for the republican party.
