Governor less popular, poll shows or Governor's approval rating falls
well, duh!!!

Wednesday, February 23, 2005

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's job approval ratings -- though still high -- have deflated markedly among state voters, who now see him as partisan and more tied to special interests, a new Field Poll shows.

The poll shows that 55 percent of the state's voters approve today of the job Republican Schwarzenegger is doing -- compared to 35 percent who disapprove and 11 percent who hold no opinion.

But that is a 10 percentage point drop from just six months ago, when 65 percent of the voters saw him positively and only 22 percent viewed his job performance negatively.

"Schwarzenegger's readings are coming down from the stratosphere,'' said Field Poll Director Mark DiCamillo. "It's almost like he's coming down to earth, where most politicians reside.''

In another important measure of public mood, the poll also shows that a majority of registered voters -- 53 percent -- believe the state is headed in the wrong direction, with 35 percent saying California is heading in the right direction. That is a significant increase from September, when 46 percent said the state was on the right track and just 38 percent said the wrong track.

The poll also shows an increased partisan split; 68 percent of Democrats and 51 percent of independents and third-party voters believe the state is heading in the wrong direction, compared to only 37 percent of Republicans.

1. I still say he wins if he runs in 2006
Republicans in CA have NO bench, so as long as it stays that way, the Democrats will take back the governorship when he leaves office. But who do the Democrats have that would be able to beat someone of the stature of Schwarzenegger? Locklear? Angeledes? Bustamante? Puleeze. Against no-name Republicans I'm sure any of these gentlemen would win, but they all will lose decisively to the Boobengrabber.

6. Perhaps, but not decisively.
Remember that he got 48% in the recall, and many Democrats didn't even choose someone but only voted "no." The media are in love with him, but many Californians are not.

I think Angelides is the best chance--he will do his utmost to link Schwarzenegger with the greatly disliked Bush, something that should have been done since 2002 when he began positioning himself.

9. Feinstein should run for governor...
...she would have a decent chance of winning. Of course then we'd need a new Dem. senator- someone more liberal than Feinstein.

5. Time to recall the Crookenator
How many Californians still don't know that he was pals with Ken Lay, and met with him during the energy crisis? If EVERYONE had known that before the election, Davis might still be in office. If you cast the things he's done while in office in the light of Enron, then you might finally convince people that jail is a better place for this sleazebag than the governorship. Come on Cali Dems, your work is cut out for you!

50% is high? as they say, buddy, you're high! That bastard has been the press darling for years now, at the same time the state has been going into the crapper.

18. Compared to Gray Davis' ratings, they're stratospheric
Hey, a 55% approval rating for a Republican governor in a heavily Democratic state is nothing to sneeze at.

11. Who are these "no opinion" people?
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 12:58 PM by quiet.american
It always amazes me how, especially in these times, anyone can have "no opinion" about what's going on in their city, in their state, in their country, in the world.

Where are these people living -- in a cave?

12. List of his backstabbing unkept committments
in Huffington's latest and longer article at Salon this falling approval SHOULD only grow.

Red ink is 68% greater since his lying ass-face began!

17. Losing state-wide democrat-held seats to republicans in off-year elections
and through resignation/appointment must make a lot of CA voters a little agitated.

In 2002 (?) Everyone was marvelling over CA having 4 of 4 statewide seats held by Democrats. Now, without a single regularly-scheduled election it's somehow 2 of 4.

I think Republicans probably love that, but it makes a lot of Dems and moderates think it's time to get back to a set of elected representatives which reflects that political makeup of the state (ie, fewer Republicans) -- ie, it's time for DEMOCRACY again in CA -- and voters are taking this out on Arnold through lower approval ratings.

19. Govenor Less Popular
When dating someone new it's always wise to look and see how you first met them, on the rebound, are they married, did they drop their former love interest, etc, because the same thing is likely to happen to you.

Arnold first met the voters of California during a Gray Davis re-call, it can happen to Arnold; California can "dump" him just like they did Davis

Oddly, Common Cause is signed on to work with him on a redistricting scheme... I'd pay VERY CLOSE attention to this. Remember, Ahnold recently trotted off to Texas to meet with DeLay's operatives.
