Bush and Chirac Reopen Wounds
America

February 23, 2005

Bush and Chirac reopen wounds
From Roland Watson and Anthony Browne in Brussels

TWELVE hours after sharing an intimate lobster risotto and proclaiming an end to their Iraq war feud, President Bush and Jaques Chirac were yesterday at loggerheads on a range of issues.

The pair disagreed on China, Iran, Iraq and the future of Nato, marring efforts by US and European leaders to declare that transatlantic relations had entered a new era of harmony.

As Mr Bush attended consecutive summits with Nato and EU heads of government Brussels police fired water cannon to break up demonstrations against his presence.

On Iran, M.Chirac urged Mr Bush to back European efforts to dissuade Tehran from pursuing nuclear weapons by granting it economic and trade benefits. M Chirac said that Iran should be allowed to buy civil aircraft engines and to join the World Trade Organisation. “I don’t see why that should not be done and I said so to the President of the United States,” he said.

More specifically, Gerhard Schröder, the German Chancellor, said that the EU wanted to sell European Airbuses to Iran.

But Mr Bush is opposed to Britain, France and Germany, the three EU countries negotiating directly with Tehran, offering such incentives.

Mr Bush declared: “We liberated Iraq. And that decision has been made, it’s over with and now it is time to unify for the sake of peace. The key now is to put that behind us and to focus on helping the new democracy succeed.”

Bush: Arrogance instead of diplomacy before (russian) summit

02/22/2005 10:15
...

"Russia, to make progress as a European nation must renew a commitment to democracy and the rule of law".

Democracy? President Putin was elected by a democratic process, was he not? Rule of law? Did the Russian Federation break every rule in the book by breaching the Geneva Convention and UN Charter, launching an illegal war, based on barefaced lies, slaughtering tens of thousands of innocent people in a sovereign nation? No.

Therefore what authority does George Bush have to speak about the rule of law and a commitment to democracy?

"Our alliance stands for a free press", says Bush.

Well, let us be the judge of that. We are free to write what we want, when we want, where we want and as we want. We can criticize President Putin, we can praise President Putin. I have done both. Many times. But only when I criticize President Bush do I receive death threats in my private and personal e-mail account.

Can someone explain this to me? It does seem an odd thing to do, to reward Iran for starting their nuclear program.

24. Here comes
Iran has been now fulfilling all its LEGAL commitments under the nuclear proliferation treaty. Which BTW states that all countries have right for peacefull use of nuclear energy.

The EU - Iran negotiations with support of IAEA are about trust building measures because Iran in the past has not been fully honest about it's nuclear program. So EU want's Iran to do MORE (ie not to enrich uranium) than it is obligated under international treaties. And quite understandably Iran wants something in return for giving up some of it's legal rights, and that is recognition as equal nation and full member in the new world order (=WTO).

As for the "rewards", well Europe likes to sell Airbuss planes and build trade partnerships, not only because trade is good for Europe (and Iran), but because the whole EU is based on the idea that close trade (and other) relationships are also a guarantee of peace and stability and strenthen democracy in the long term, and EU does not apply this basic philosophy only between memberstates, but with all foreign policy and especially neighboring areas.

20. My favorite tidbit from Chimpy's Excellent European Adventure
NPR's report tonight that all 26 members of the EU had agreed to support training for Iraq's police/officer corps.

France's contribution? One additional officer at NATO headquarters to coordinate equipment and/or supply shipments to Iraq. And this in addition to the news that ChimpCo considers a total NATO pledge of $5.2 million (that's million with an "M") to the mission described above as "symbolically important".

36. Chirac snub to Bush
Chirac snub to Bush

The Sun - February 22, 2005

IRAQ war wobbler Jacques Chirac scuttled George Bush’s fence-mending trip to Europe yesterday — by cranking up a row over the future of Nato.

He embraced a German-led plot to ditch the alliance as the backbone of transatlantic relations, in favour of the European Union.

He also snubbed President Bush by speaking French at a dinner, despite having fluent English.

49. Chirac had hosted Bush during the 60th Anniversary of D-Day
and Bush watched the parade marches of the allied vets like he'd smoked too much pot...he was dazed, bored, and appeared to be chewing gum. He also missed the plot of what a real alliance was.

Chirac, meanwhile, was the picture of dignity.

Then, there was Cheney dressed like a snowbunny at Auschwitz, breaking all standards of protocol.

Chirac has a litany of reasons why Bush has every right to be treated like the maniacal spoiled brat that he is.

On the other hand, I'm a bit confused about the way, Bush's visit in Europe is perceived at DU.
It seems that all the mainstream media and our leaders from Chirac to Schröder really try to comfort Bush.
Germany's export industy highly depends on the USA, while Bush is coming here, searching for a coalition to invade Iran and Syria.

The Bush-adminstration still has weapons to blackmail Europe.

Bush just as Chirac welcomed Schröder's suggestions to reform the Nato.

If you're a puritan pervert idiot, looking for tits, the Sun might be the right choice; but otherwise, I wouldn't even use it as toilet paper.

57. Kerry would have understood the French.
While I have my doubts about Bush concerning correct English.

59. I'm afraid there is some kind of "reconciliation"
between Europe and Bush. French MSM are playing now the friendship tune...
Maybe there is some heavy arm-twisting or a big deal. France and US spoke together in the Lebanon-Syria case: Bush is offering Chirac Lebanon in exchange for a support in his next crusade.
I noticed also how the french MSM are now speaking of "terrorists" attacks inside Iraq instead of "insurgents".

65. Bush and Chirac reopen wounds

Times

In Moscow, President Putin took issue with Mr Bush’s criticism of his drift towards authoritarianism, saying that Russia would develop its own form of democracy without foreign interference.

67. Well, there you have it. Right on schedule!!
Condi goes in 'diplomatically' paving the way and setting the prep for Bush to claim credit for great things accomplished in the name of freedom and democracy, only for Bush to show up and stay the course with resolve to fuck things up...again.

68. "We liberated Iraq?" Get real, Bonzo.
What an embarrassment that idiot is. I just cringe when his handlers let him outside the confines of Crawford Texas.

He's the one who alienated the EU from the U.S. He's responsible and it will take generations to repair all the damage he's done to our foreign relations. Friggin' fool. Have I told you today just how much I HATE that man?
