FDA Panel: Celebrex Should Stay on Market

By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Advisers to the Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites) concluded Friday the popular painkiller Celebrex poses an increased risk for heart problems but should remain on the market because the benefits outweighs the dangers.

The FDA (news - web sites)'s arthritis and drug safety advisory committees, concluding three days of meetings to assess the risks of three popular painkillers called Cox-2 inhibitors, were to address Vioxx and Bextra later in the day. All three drugs have been approved for sale by the government.

The advisers also were set to frame recommendations to the FDA about whether further testing is needed for the drugs and any special warnings or limits placed on them.

"We need to find the unique patients that will benefit from this drug and work out what they need to be told," said meeting Chairman Alistair J.J. Wood of Vanderbilt University Medical School.

2. Celebrex is great stuff
for short term, moderate pain. Dental pain was GONE on that stuff.

However, for chronic or severe pain, nothing is safer than opiates.

It's time for doctors to overrule those cowboys in the DEA. Some people need opiates to function. They should get them. Period.

7. Opiates not the best solution
Opiates control pain, but do not treat inflamation. NSAID's and Cox II inhibitors are more effective for inflamatory arthritis. Of course before Cox II inhibitors, or any other drugs, are used, we need full and accurate information about their side effects to decide if they are worth the risk.

4. What message does this send the children?
That's what I always receive back from my legislators (Hutchinson, Cronyn) when I inquire about medical marijuana.

Then they'll point to falsified studies done decades ago and say "Marijuana is extremely dangerous."

Meanwhile Celebrex/Vioxx have contributed more deaths in two years than marijuana has in 200 years.

::shrug::
