'America would back Israel attack on Iran'
By Francis Harris in Washington
(Filed: 18/02/2005)

President George W Bush added a new twist to the international tension over Iran's nuclear programme last night by pledging to support Israel if it tries to destroy the Islamic regime's capacity to make an atomic bomb.

Asked whether he would back Israel if it raided Teheran's nuclear facilities, Mr Bush first expressed cautious solidarity with European efforts, led by Britain, France and Germany, to negotiate with Iran.

But he quickly qualified himself, adding that all nations should be concerned about whether Iran could make nuclear weapons.

"Clearly, if I was the leader of Israel and I'd listened to some of the statements by the Iranian ayatollahs that regarded the security of my country, I'd be concerned about Iran having a nuclear weapon as well. And in that Israel is our ally, and in that we've made a very strong commitment to support Israel, we will support Israel if her security is threatened."

38. Why do we need to hide behind Israel?
Bush* obviously doesn't care about what the world thinks of us. We might as well go ahead and just bomb every country out there for no reason but domination.

After 9/11 I sold my SUV and went back to Japanese Toyota Corollas and then Priuses.

36. BTW, an article in a recent "Glamour" magazine about men and sex
featured the question and answer format. One of the questions was something about "what's with the size thing?" The answer - published nationwide in "Glamour" magazine included the note about why many women see a guy driving a Hummer and immediately think - "someone's OVERCOMPENSATING..."

Wonder how fast Hummer sales would fall off if that became an ever-more-public part of the zeitgeist?

you mean the body of partisan hacks, akin to the politburo in Soviet times...that's no congress.

With respect to war...Congress has been derelict in its duty since World War II...not a single DECLARED war since.

given to Sharon.........

How will the rest of the Arab world percieve this?

How will our enemies react? Will they now percieve the need for a "pre-emptive" strike?

Will this encourage others to rush their Nuclear development programs to prevent an attack?

The chimp hasn't thought this through very well........

This just kicks it all up another notch. Who does bush think he is, Emeril? He's playing with fire and just doesn't even know or care. I mean, yes, I can understand the tensions Israel must feel. But there ARE ways to speak of this in public without throwing a tanker of gasoline on a fire, for heaven's sakes.

Sittin' in a tree...

Oh - er - where was I?

It'a as though they've just GOT to prove whose dick is bigger. GAWD but I hate this sibling rivalry stuff. And for bush it's an oedipus complex on top of everything.

BTW, I, too, am on the alert for their tripping themselves up along the way. I'm betting something in the "Jeff Monica Gannon" scandal might do it. All the ingredients are certainly there. And nothing seems to succeed with the lizard brain of the average American consumer like a sex scandal.

13. US & Israel -- terrorist partners
In the name of fighting terror both the US and Israel have probably killed more people -- and a good number of those killed have been innocents -- babies, children and just ordinary citizens just going about their lives.

With each new attack -- more terrorists are created.

It was claimed that Iraq was a breeding ground for terrorists -- and we now know that was a lie. BUT it is now true -- seems like bushie is making his dearest fantasies come true.

So next attack Iran -- then UNITE the nation behind their leaders AND have China & Russia pissed off at the US.

Ah gee then perhaps Miz Con-them-all Rice will get to make use of her "old" Russia degree. I think perhaps her Professors forgot to tell her that most of what we learn in college is out of date in the real world (except for a few degrees -- history & English etc).

The old cold war -- Iron curtain & the "good" USA is long gone.

This is like watching a really old movie -- and we see the actors being given choices -- and they ALWAYS make the wrong choice. The choices these idiots are making are not for the good of the world or the good of humankind -- but rather for a very small elite players in the background.

I am damned ashamed to be an American.

25. The real terrorists are the Soccer Moms in Hummers
and the oil companies that provide them with the Ecstasy (gasoline) fix. We are in the mess we are in - not because of Israel but as Pogo said "I have seen the enemy - and it is us."

Our heroin like addiction to imported oil. We import 60% of our oil -- we import 30% of our oil from the Middle East. And drilling in ANWR or off of Santa Barbara or off of Tampa wont change it.

And when we pay $50/bbl - not one penny of that goes to the Arab proletariat or the Palestinian proletariat -- it goes to the super rich friends of Bush --- to throw in the faces of the Arab proletariat and the Palestinian proletariat.

29. that's certainly part of it...
Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 02:16 PM by LinuxInsurgent
but there are "non-resource" reasons for our intervention as well..and a lot are ideological (neoconservatived, religious "armaggedon-seekers", etc)

I fear there's little we can do on the domestic side...they are firmly in control....Iraq needs to win this resistance war...and Iran needs to stand firm, if we ever see Israel and the U.S. discredited...(and by extension, the proponents of Likudite/neoconservative/Christian war).

I know some of you may abhor that I'm "rooting" for the "enemy"...but I cannot see what other morally-consistent stance to adopt...I abhor American empire...and don't seem to see its downfall within domestic politcs...and I feel what we are doing to the world is horrendous. I side with those that are innocent and have the moral high ground...and right now...that is not us.

39. Petroleum Is The Major Issue
The "Monopoly Rents" on crude do not go for the Arab or Palestinian proletariat. They go to support oppressive regimes - who in turn have to pay "protection" to those who would overthrow them. That "protection" is what funds the jihadists - and the terrorists. If it weren't for that "protection" democracy would flower in the region.

In my perverted value system - I would have no problem paying $50/bbl - or even $100/bbl - if the "monopoly rents" were going to build a better society for the Arab and Palestinian proletariat. (I can smugly say that because I drive a Prius).

Some appenders say that Israel wouldn't occupy the West Bank if we didn't provide them with military aid. Okay - what are the "monopoly rents" on crude -- "military aid" to the jihadists and subsiding the decadence of the Saudi Royals.

22. Saddam never was a threat.
He only invaded Iran after Iraqi border cities were attacked by Iran.

He invaded Kuwait after Kuwait was holding back on some debt repayment and was claimed to be doing slant drilling.

Add in the no-fly zones and Saddam was contained. And, as Gen. Zinni pointed out, containment was working.
