73. Wishful thinking as 28 more killed by suicide bombers today
We're beyond the "infamous Jan.30th elections" -- what has changed, yesterday another oil pipeline was blown up that serviced Turkey, bombers aren't cutting back at all if anything more are dead AFTER the elction...Rumsfeld insists on sending the 50+ year old guardsmen to take care of business in Iraq.

The next couple of months will paint a good picture on how succesful the invading of Iraq under the guise of WMD's will be!

WASHINGTON - President Bush said yesterday that he wants to straighten out Iran and Syria by diplomatic means, but indicated that if longtime-ally Israel feels the need to do more, then the United States has her back.

Bush said he will use meetings in Europe next week to discuss Iran and Syria and try again to convince reluctant European allies to contribute to efforts to stabilize Iraq.

"Syria is out of step with the progress being made in the greater Middle East," Bush said in a news conference. "I look forward to working with our European friends on my upcoming trip to talk about how we can work together to convince the Syrians to make rational decisions."

"the greater Middle East". When did it take on that title?

This is trouble in the making. We saw it three years ago.

the protestor was undoubtedly not allowed to bring anything into the room that was remotely throw-able except his or her shoes. The protestor used what was available to make a statement.

I'm sure they are rethinking their 'shoes allowed' policy.

It's the one thing they can't realistically ban. It's the one thing everyone carries with them, but can, for a time, do without.

Throw your shoes. Aim wide, so they don't hit (and, if you have good aim, make them think it will), but make the statement.

18. Dean vs. Perle -- Framing, Flying Shoes, and More
Dean was introduced to a huge cheer, Perle not so much. The debate, centered on foreign policy after 9/11 was great. Dean refused to admit that the Democrats were weak on national security despite Perle politely asking him to do so. The nerve.

Perle defended the Iraq war with a tired line about the intelligence being the best available blah blah blah that even he didn't sound like he believed. Of course, it's hard to sound too convincing when you're dodging a shoe thrown at you by an audience member screaming "Motherfucking liar."
.........
The highlight of the night came in the phase of the debate when panelists were invited to ask questions. Perle had just spoken for a while, trashing the Dems on national security as usual. The panel then asked Dean an unrelated question. Before responding to that question, the Good Doctor said to Perle something like "Before I respond I want to say that Richard has attempted to do something that I'm not going to let him get away with, and that is frame the debate. As chairman I don't intend to let them continue to frame the debate." Be still my beating heart. You could almost hear Luntz sighing in dismay and Lakoff sighing in relief.
............
Then, even better, only a few feet further on I came across the Doctor surrounded by a small crowd of well-wishers. I said "Governor, may I shake your hand," rendered the question moot by sticking my hand out at him, and received a firm handshake for my troubles. Chairman Dean looked right at me and said "Thank you." No, thank you.

26. Dean trades barbs with Richard Perle!
PORTLAND, Ore. - Howard Dean, the newly minted leader of the Democratic Party, and former Pentagon adviser Richard Perle made clear their opposing views on the war in Iraq during a debate marred by a protester who tossed a shoe at Perle.

Perle had just started his comments Thursday when a protester threw a shoe at him before being dragged away, screaming, ``Liar! Liar!''

Perle, who was Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld's top policy adviser, was a key architect of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, and Dean is among the war's most prominent opponents.

In his new role as chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Dean has stressed that Democrats are stronger than Republicans on defense.

``Defense is a lot broader than swaggering around saying you're going to kick Saddam's butt,'' Dean said Thursday, drawing cheers from the crowd in this city that overwhelmingly voted Democratic last November.

40. KO by Dean
"Defense is a lot broader than swaggering around saying you're going to kick Saddam's butt," Dean said Thursday.

vs.

Perle: Democrats "looked at the Democratic Party and chose a physician to lead them."

Right...nice comeback, dork. Cause the Republicans choosing a moron to lead them is something to be proud of. I'll be sure to make sure I call everyone who cuts me off on the highway a physician so they know just how little I think of them. ::shakes fist:: "You darn...physicians!"

New meme: Democrats - our leader took a pledge to "first do no harm." Theirs--1400 soldiers dead and still rising.

Game, set, and match, Dr. Dean. Our team gets to go for ice cream.

The country is sick--possibly near death, and if one is sick, one turns to a doctor for healing. So Dr. Dean is the man who can provide the treatment plan for making this once-great nation great again.

Usually the repukes are so careful about limiting their "public" appearances to audiences of devoted loyalists, carefully screened by the Secret Service, obliged to submit sworn statements of fealty before being granted admittance, and whose questions must be submitted in writing in advance for vetting by Karl Rove.

Perle must have lost his mind to subject himself to exposure to the real public.

54. He's one of many in a long line of chickenhawks....
http://www.alternet.org/story/14070

"The chairman of Rumfeld's Defense Policy Board (DPB) and one of the most visible advocates of military action to oust Saddam, Richard Perle, spent Vietnam at the University of Chicago (along with Wolfowitz) before joining the staff of Sen. Henry "Scoop" Jackson, who at the time was among the last remaining Democrats to support the Vietnam war.

"Maybe Mr. Perle would like to be in the first wave of those who go into Baghdad," Hagel quipped recently, earning him an outraged rebuke by the editors at the Wall Street Journal who called the crack "particularly shabby." Another highly visible super-hawk and Perle protégé, CSP founder-director Frank Gaffney, also avoided military service during Vietnam.

Here's a startling fact: only four of the 32 prominent right-wingers who authored the now-famous Sept. 20 PNAC letter to Bush urging him to extend the war on terrorism to Iraq -- as well as Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, and the Palestinian Authority -- have any military experience. And three of those four were in the reserves like Bush."

And if I'm not mistaken, Perle owns a farmhouse in - gasp! - France.

Ok, I don't get it. Is Perle claiming that the voters actually elected Bill Frist to be President?

This is why I don't listen to, read, talk to, or otherwise engage the radical religious right.
They have a problem making themselves clear. And when they do, it's bizarre-o world.

He's implying that we are a bunch of sick f*cks and need a doctor.
har har har

The radical religious right looked that the Republican Party and chose a hillbilly-wanna-be clown to lead them.

Which is the better choice?

66. How appropriate - A Eastern culture insult!
.
.
.

"According to Iraqi/Arab/Eastern culture, shoes are a symbol of dirt and degradation. If you're going into someone's house or a mosque, you would always take your shoes off first. Shoes are used to beat servants, thieves, or prostitutes; it indicates servility. It literally means you regard them as dirt under your foot. If you were to beat your children, this would be done with a stick or the hand, but never shoes. Also, its considered poor protocol to cross your legs in front of others, as showing someone the underside of the shoe is an insult."

77. So people support throwing objects at speakers?
Unless I've missed it, I've seen almost nothing on this thread that expresses much in the way of dissapproval of the shoe having been thrown at Pearle.

I think Pearle has been wrong about just about everything he's ever uttered and I consider him a fanatical neocon who's ideas need to be discredited. However, I certainly do not support throwing shoes at him. Infact, I condemn such actions and find them utterly childish.

Dean is talking about a 50 state strategy, so presumably he may be speaking in bright red states from time to time. Would it be so hilarious if Dean was speaking somewhere, say in Georgia for example, and some nimrod threw a shoe at him? I rather doubt this forum would find that a laughing matter - infact, I'd bet some would argue that assault charges should be filed against whomever threw it.

If we don't want those representing our side getting stuff thrown at them when they are in a public forum, then we sure as hell should be speaking against actions such as this. I don't care how angry people are, it does not excuse lobbing objects at a public speaker.

81. And plenty on the right...
...see Clinton as a criminal. Is it okay for them to throw shoes at him during public appearances because they believe that? Plenty of wingnuts also believe Kerry is a traitor. Is it acceptable for them to throw shoes at Kerry during speeches?

What comes around goes around. Why should anyone invited to a public appearance have anything thrown at them? It simply doesn't matter if you like them or not - throwing stuff at them is childish and wrong. You can bet that if someone on our side got hit with a shoe thrown by some freeper type that this forum would be howling with outrage and indignation.

If we don't want this kinda crap happening to people we support, we sure as hell should not be applauding it when anyone else is subjected to it. It really is just that simple.

Ever heard of the "Afghanistan Trap" proudly designed by Zbigniew Brzinzski, Carter's National Security Advisor? He wrote "The Grand Chessboard", basically a blueprint for what the neocons are doing now.

Carter has done a lot of good since he left office, probably to make up for the bad he was likely forced to do as the leader of the empire.

I think the appeal of this kind of coverage is that it seems to take something like this to get the media to report that we aren't all just one big happy family in this country anymore. Anything that disrupts the soporific representation of everything's alright, wave the flag and go peacefully to sleep little sheeple, becomes a beacon of light in a very dark night.

99. i'm disgusted too...
so that was the purpose of the war...to symbolically PEE on their country in the form of a square named after the Imperial President that waged it?

For Perle and his neocon ILK, it's always been about projecting American power...about using the power that we know we have for imperial gains...and it comes out of their Straussian roots (their believe in classical political philosophy...which argues that there is hierarchies of power and abilities...hence the U.S. is at the top of the pyramid, for them). The Greeks used to argue that there was a natural order of things...a sort of Social Darwinism...some are born with knowledge (the philosopher kings), some are born with strength (the warrior class), and some were born to be the mass, the herd, the proleteriat/lumpenproletariat, take your term pick. Perle and The Neocons want a return to that "hierarchical" political point of view...and since the U.S is top dog (in their world), they are all for the U.S. taking its "rightful place" as the Imperial nation.

Dean is representing the strain of America that is horrified with our imperialism...and that belives our power is for good, not imperialism. That believes in the modern updates to political philosophy that come out of the Reformation, the Enlightenment and the philosophies of Rousseau, Locke, Mill, Marx, etc.

It's basically an ideological battle between Ancient political philosophy (viewing social hierarchies as legitimate) and modern political philosophies (liberalism, marxism, etc. that hold egalitarianism, justice, democracy, etc. as good values).

That's really the ideological debate between Perle and Dean...and why it seems that the Neocons are such uncaring bastards...because...they are...they care not for those they consider hierarchically below them.

97. Article sounded neutral to me. Pretty much any time the neocons
open their mouths they lie and hang themselves. So I had no problem with putting a face and some words up there.

Otherwise they replace one set of realities for another. So whatever goes on the record in a live event is exactly what we need. Then Perle can eat crow and the shoe when the Islamist leaders of Iraq decide never to name any part of Iraq after an infidel (which is more likely).

100. a square in Bagdad named for Bush--I have heard this before-but it

was a statue that some conservatice group wanted to put up.

......Perle had his own barbs, too. He began his opening comments in the 1 1/2-hour debate by saying Democrats "looked at the Democratic Party and chose a physician to lead them."

Perle was forced by one of the questioners to recast a comment he made on Sept. 22, 2003, in which he predicted that within one year, there would be "a grand square in Baghdad named for President Bush (news - web sites)."

"I'd be a fool not to recognize that it did not happen on the schedule I had in mind," Perle said, adding that he did not deny that the administration had made mistakes in Iraq.

But, Perle added, "I will be surprised, yet again, if we do not see a square in Baghdad named after this president." He did not specify a time. ......

103. A "doctor as leader" is just more propaganda.
It is the wording that calls you back to grade 4. You can see the sneer on Perle's face as he said it. The message is for freepers to purse their lips and say: "he is a doctor - can you believe it? A D o c t o r!! How dare those Democrats hurt the American way by electing "a doctor" to lead them."

Reminds me of the old political story about Americans in some southern state. The Republicans wanted to win and so the last weekend of the campaign they let the story out that "the democratic incumbent had a sister who was a known thespian in New York". To the ignorant voters who the Republicans were addressing this slur to - it sounded to them like the Democrat had a sister who was a 'known' lesbian in New York. In the middle of this century (when this took place) just the hint of that and using strategically similar words was enough for the Democrat to loose the election.

Exactly the same thing. I say bring em on the quotes from this juvenile bunch of neocons who are insulting the intelligence of American. I cannot wait till I hear the next 'quote'.

Dr. Dean is a “known” “doctor” !!
